RE: Soils at the Blue Pit in Garfield County, Colorado
I have been a professional engineer in Colorado for.29 years and have had extensive experience
working with soils for building construction as well as soils at mine sites. A new Soils Map has
-been prepared which shows all the soils types that are located within the vicinity of the mine.
For all buildings that already exist at the mine, which include the plants and the shop/office
structure, all true topsoil has been removed from the area and the underlying gravels have
been exposed. These gravels have very little clay material since they were washed over tens of
thousands of years by the Roaring Fork River. As the River eroded into the bed, the gravels
around the floodplain were raised and now form 'an elevated terrace. Due to lack of day and
silt, there are no expansive clay soils and there are no other limiting factors for these gravel
soils with respect to building constructiOn. The replacement office/administration building will
have no construction issues related to soils.
The existing buildings have been in place for many years and none have any problems with soil
foundation issues.
Sincerely, Greg Lewicki, P. E.
