The closest tesidence is approxim*tv. r miles south of the site, with other area residences Iying approximately 10 miles iouth of the site in Parachute' This cuttings storage fucifity presents"relltively benign effects in terms of noise, odor, dust' and visual impact, therefore .uffici"rrt distance exisis to pl'ovide protection to sumounding properties fiom the minimal impacts of this facility. ATTACHMENT B DESCRIPTION OF IMPACTS NORTH PARACHUTE RANCH CUTTINGS STORAGE FACILITY The site area is located in a remote area along the Parachute Creek drainage north of Palachute in Garfield County. The proposed cuttings storage facility was located on the top surface of the Unocal retort/spent straie pile, The topography is relatively flat and slopes to the east at an app'oximate 3% grade. T^he location o?'tt" proposed North Patachute Ranch (NPR) facility is underlain by 3 to 5 feet of cover soil and up to 100 feet of spent shale. The cover soil on the retort pile is a gravelly, sandy silt. Ephemeral East Fork of Parachute Creek runs east to west approximately Z mile south of the faciliry location, This drainage was not affected by operation of the storage facility. Because the facility was locatecl on a Unocal retorUspent shale pile, no existing vegetation was impacted as a result of construction or use of this facility. Information from the site-specific soils investigations indicated that the depth to alluvial ground water near the cuttings facitity is approximately 120 feet below the elevation of the facility bottom, The depth io groond watei along with water chemistry, and characteristics of the underlying soil iniicate that the site is within a non-sensitive area. The cuttings facility has been designed to protect surface and ground water resources.
