Dear Ms. Burke:

Per your email and photographs dated December 12, December 16, 2012 and January 6, 2013
it is our understanding that the local building inspector has questioned the interior steel post
connection to the steel beam and the support foundation. After our review of the photographs
provided and a review of the details on Sheet S-2, it is our opinion that the detail installed does
not match the design drawings.
In an email from 58 Consulting to you on January 7, 2013 we provided the following comment
and recommendation. The photos appear to be a 4"x 12" steel plate with two (2) 3/8" or 1/2"
bolts attaching it to the foundation. The drawing specifies a 12"x12" steel plate with four (4)
1/2" bolts. In addition, the top of the post is not quite the same as the detail either. Following
is our recommendation without complete removal and replacement of the post.
• Top — at the top of the post 'bend' the protruding stubs around the bottom flange of the
beam and make sure the top plate of the post is tack welded to the steel beam.
• Bottom — At the base of the post we need to add some steel. On each side of the post
add a 4"x12" piece of steel the same thickness as the current base plate and weld to the
existing baseplate with a partial -penetration square groove weld. In addition, each new
piece shall have a hole to accommodate a 1/2" diameter x 4" Hilti Kwik Bolt TZ
anchor. The centerline of the bolt hole shall not be less than 1 1/2" from the edge of
the steel plate.
In your email dated January 23, 2013 you provided photographs and a written description of
the work performed by your contractor. Per your contractor ..."We were able to crib the beam
at each location, install the 12x12 plates and weld the vertical supports to the plates. The plates
were then attached to the concrete foundations at each location with 4 each, 1/2 " anchors per
spec. I also provided pic of the vertical support and beam tie. The support was welded at
installation. We folded the tabs over per your request..."

After our review of the photographs provided and the description of work performed it is our
opinion that the detail installed is acceptable and will provide the support intended and
required.
