Thanks for all your hard work and seeing this one thru, I Greatly appreciate your over and beyond professional efforts in this unusual matter. Thank You Jim Wilson Garfield Co. Building Dept. From: Donna Albani [mailto:donna@steammaster.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2012 4:49 PM To: Jim Wilson Subject: Cronenberg Crawl space - 12 Brown Ct. Jim, Yesterday, I met with the Residential Specialist from Dow about Thermax Sheathing insulation. I did not realize that there are several thicknesses of Thermax to choose from that meet the fire requirements. The homeowner has decided that she would like to have a layer of Thermax foam board placed over the SiverGlo foam as the thermal break. I am writing to have you confirm that a 1" layer will be acceptable for you, and I can finish this job ! Please let me know asap. Thanks, Donna Albani 1901 S Main Street 1 P.O. April 3, 2012 Donna Albani Steam Master Restoration and Cleaning, LLC P.O. Box 329 Minturn, CO 81645 Subject: Fire Coating Foam at Building Crawl Space Dear Ms. Albani This letter is in regards to your inquiry as to the use of the Firefree 88, fire resistant coating as a means to provide a level of fire protection to foam previously installed at the crawl space of a building. I received your foam sample which was a combination polystyrene/ polyethylene foam with graphite particles mixed into the blend. This particular foam has a lower melting temperature than polyurethane foam and upon ignition will turn to liquid and resemble burning, flowing lava. The key to preventing this from occurring is to keep the face side temperature down on the foam. The two test standards used to rate fire performance on foam are the thermal barrier or the room corner test in which the material is tested for 15 minutes at temperatures of 1500 degrees F to 1700 degrees F. My understanding, in your particular situation, is the code (in which there were no fire requirements) changed to where foam now has to meet one of the two above requirements. This occurred after the foam was installed and the job completed. I coated the surface (foil face) of the sample at 19mils dry and applied a torch for 4 minutes at 2300 degrees F. The coating had good adhesion and stayed in place over the time of the test. The foam did melt away from the foil over the course of the burn but most importantly the foam never ignited or created the flowing lava effect. It is to be noted that graphite is a fire retardant material and provides some small measure of help in stabilizing this foarn in a fire case scenario. In your situation the foam is situated in a sub -floor area that has no combustibles (water heater, furnace) that would cause a potential problem, thus further providing a safer, non threatening fire condition. We have conducted fire testing on numerous foams and have passed the room corner test on polyurethane foam and other foams to other ASTM testing standards. We have performed ASTM E-84 testing on foam similar to your foam but without the graphite. Our client achieved a class "A" rating on his foam panels with a 35mi1 dry coat application of FF88. 580 Irwin Street, No. 1 San Rafael, CA 94901 www.firefree.com 888-990-3388 415-459-6055 fax All testing has been performed at IAS/ICC certified fire testing laboratories. We are UL certified and Factory Mutual listed and labeled. It is to be noted with the advent of new codes being established for foam, the manufacturers of this particular foam will have to conduct the required fire tests that pertain to their foam. Based on the testing that we have performed on foam and the testing our client has performed on foam similar to your product, we are recommending a 40 mil dry coat application to the foam located in the sub -floor area of your project. At this thickness you will cover 28 square feet per gallon. The coating is water based, is non toxic and has 4 low VOC level of 33 grams per liter. The coating can be applied with an airless spray gun using a 52111000th heavy duty tip. An independent third party inspection may be required. We can work with your applicator on the installation. If you should have further questions or require additional information, please let me know. Best regards, Firefree Coatings, Inc.
