The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our agreetnent for professional engineering services to Sunlight Mountain Cabin, LLC, dated August 23, 2012. The proposed garage will be separate from the existing cabin and will he a 1 story wood flame structure with a slab-on-gradc floor, Foundations were designed for an assumed allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in three levels from 1 to 6 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The excavation steps down to the south. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted mainly of reddish brown, medium dense, silty gravelly sand. The southern side of the excavation was based in dark brown, medium stiff sandy silty clay with roots. Based on the soils exposed in the sides of the excavation, the clay appears to be about 1 foot thick below cut depth and overlies the silty sand. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a sample of the dark brown sandy silty clay taken from the site, shown on Figure 1, indicate the clay soils are moderately to highly compressible under conditions of loading and wetting. The sample showed moderate collapse potential (settlement under constant load) when wetted. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist to moist.
