1 - Site Prep and Excavation: The soils at the bottom of the base trench must be firm. If the area has been previously excavated, remove material and replace with granular base, compacting In 8" lifts or less.
- Remove all surface vegetation and organo soils. This material should not be used as backfill.
- Excavate behind the wall to accommodate the design length of the geogrid. Refer to section views below for exact length.
- Excavate base trench at the wall location. Dig the trench, per detail below a minimum of 24" wide and 8" deep plus the required amount to accommodate the burled timbers.
- Compact and level base trench to 95 % of Standard Proctor.
2 - Install Base Material: The base material must be a well -graded aggregate, with a balanced mix of grain sizes, ranging from 0.25" to 1.5".
- Place drain pipe at the back of the trench the length of the wall. The drain pipe will need to be vented to daylight or to a storm sewer system.
- Per the detail below place a minimum of 8" of base material In the base trench and rake smooth.
- Compact with a mechanical plate compactor to 95 % Standard Proctor.
- Check the entire length for level, and adjust as needed
3 - Install Base Course: Irregularities In the base course become larger as the wall stacks up. Careful attention to a straight and level base course will ensure a quality finished wall.
- Begin at the lowest wall elevation.
- Check and adjust for level and alignment of all timbers. Verify the proper position of all timber units by examining a string line across the front or by sighting down the wall.
- Place an approved drainage gravel directly behind the timbers and on site fill for the remaining area and compact as required in 8" lifts or less.
4 - Compact Soil: Compaction of the material behind the timbers Is critical for a quality wall.
- Use a mechanical plate compactor, compacting in a path parallel to the wall, worldng from the back of the timbers to the back of the backfill material.
- Carefully compact near the back of the timbers to assure that the compacting process Is not tilting the timbers forward. All backfill soils must be compacted to a minimum 95
- Remove all excess material from the top surface of all timbers. This prepares a smooth surface for placement of the next course.
5 - install Mlragrid 3XT Geogrid: Orientation of the geogrld Is of extreme importance, do not splice the geogrid. Refer to the manufacturer's specifications and guidelines.
- Cut sections of geogrid to specified lengths. Refer to the section views below for exact size and location.
- install the layer of geogrid by attaching it to the timbers as shown In the detail. The excavation area must be fully compacted and level to the top of the timber.
- Stack the next course of timbers on top of the geogrld and screw in-place, so that the new course Is offset from the timber below as required.
- Pull on the back of the grid to remove any slack. Stake in place If necessity before placing and compacting soli above.
6 - Backfill and Compact: Proper compacting of the soil below and above the geogrid is of extreme importance. Never operate compaction equipment directly on geogrid.
- Place the drain gravel behind the timbers and on site soils for the remaining area behind the gravel. Quality check the process to assure that slack In the geogrld has not occured.
- Compact in maximum 8 Inch lifts starting behind the timbers and working in a path that runs parallel to the wall towards the back of the reinforced zone. Compact all materials to a minimum 95
% Standard Proctor.
T - Install Additional Courses:
- Repeat steps 5 & 6 to complete wall to height required, Installing grid where needed per the details below.
- Some of the buried timbers and all of the exposed should have a minimum of 1" setback for each 12" of wall height. See section views for exact amount needed.
- Check every course of timbers for level, straightness and proper setback, adjust as necessary.
