Joh No. 114 0388
Subject: Observation of Foundation Bearing Conditions, Proposed Residence, Lot
48, Pinyon Mesa, Cliffrose Way and Pinyon Mesa Drive, Garfield County,
Colorado
Dear Mr. GatTett :
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation and placement of backfill under footings at the subject site from November 19
to December I, 2014 to evaluate the soils for foundation support. The finding,5 of our
observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in.this report.
We previously conducted a subsoil study fo r design of foundations at the site and
presented our findings in a report dated March 7, 2014, Job No. 114 111 A.
The footing excavations were subexcavated 5 feet below footing grade (about 8 feet
below the surrounding ground surface) and 5 feet of on-site soil was moistened and
compacted back up to design footing grade as recommended in the subsoil study.
The excavation subgrade was firm and not frozen prior to placement of structural fill . The
on-site fill soils were moistened at the stockpile and were observed to be well mixed and
not frozen when placed. Compaction testing was performed on the underfooting backfill
as described in our daily reports between November 19 and December I, 2014. The
density test results indicate that the structural fill was compacted to at least 98% of the
maximum standard Proctor density at moisture contents near optimum.
The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously
encountered on the site and the compacted structural fill is suitable for support of spread
footings designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf.
Concrete should not be placed on frozen soils. Other recommendations presented in our
previous report which are applicable should also be observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation o f the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation the density test results and the previous limited
subsurface exploration at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the
excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any

variations encountered in the excavation conditions for possible changes to
recommendations contained in this letter. Our services do not include detennining the

Tested : resi dence was tested. A site specific proctor value for this lot has not yet been
determined for today's testing. Tests were taken in materials prepared to
several moisture content levels to determine where best compaction was
being achieved. Visual cues of appropriate compaction including the
sheepsfoot compactor 'walking out' of the soil indicated appropriate
compaction effort and moisture conditioning. When laboratory Proctor value
was obtained, the test results (below) indicated satisfactory compaction had
been achieved.

Description of Earthwork The under-footing fill material for the west wall of the residence was tested.
Tested : Ground temperature below construction insulation blankets was 35°F.
Contractor excavated material from the west wall of the residence for
immediate processing and replacement. Due to existing ground contours and
foundation design, the footing elevation along the western wall of the
residence is less than 3 feet below the existing ground elevation. All
elevations are referenced to the existing ground surface. Compaction and
