We currently make do with a cramped basement space as our Outdoor Program storage facility and trip logistics hub. All of the school's camping gear and equipment, non-perishable food, and packing supplies are housed here, and this is where all trip logistics are initiated. Later we must haul thousands of pounds of gear and food up and out of the Wilderness Room, across the parking lot, and into the gym to issue it to the various trips. The benefits of a purpose -designed and -built Active Center will be many. The new center will be a place to: • Celebrate and support the Active Curriculum with 4,470 sq. feet of dedicated space; • Plan and organize trips, issue equipment efficiently, and handle de -issue including equipment repair and inventory more effectively; • Support soccer program including restrooms, visiting team changing room, and lightning refuge; • Be close to busses for ski and board storage and boot drying between trips; • House the bike program, including repair shop and race prep, in addition to ski tuning in the winter; and • Host orientation of large groups, outdoor movies, music etc. supporting weekend activities and interim as well. Building Features • Located directly adjacent to busses with drive up access on all sides; • Oriented for inspirational views of Mount Sopris and Red Hill; • Passive solar design for occupied spaces; • Roof angles evoke a mountain silhouette and are optimal for solar panels; • Simple barn like plan to support a variety of uses and changing activities during the course of the year; • Large open central area serves as overflow shop and storage space and handles large numbers of people setting out on or returning from Wilderness, Fall and Spring Trips; • Central open area to encourage interaction between different interest groups; • Central open area to make diverse aspects of the Active Program visible and exciting to visitors; and • Durable materials and simple construction to allow for rugged use and modification over time. Specific Building Features in support of the program • Map room and large table so 2-3 groups can work on four USGS quads at a time; • Map room doubles as a classroom space—place to show videos, etc.; • Comfortable hang out place to encourage use of resources for trips (maps, notebooks, guides, etc.); • Large photo wall to celebrate the long history of CRMS in the wilderness; • Faculty bins assigned annually so less time is spent rounding up key equipment; • Wet and dry food storage and space to sort food so trips don't impact the main kitchen; • Large covered outdoor space with hoses and an air compressor for trip issue and de -issue; • Exposed structure and/or lines to dry tarps, hang bicycles, etc.; • Dedicated workbench for equipment maintenance and repair; • UV protected storage for rafts, where they will not get in the way of daily kayak use; • Central and organized storage for all trip gear to reduce loss and damage; • Space for rolling shelves and overflow inventory; • Storage for emergency loan of clothing, sleeping bags and pads; and • Pantry cooled with outside air to reduce refrigerator requirements.
