request of the Building Official prior to beginning the plan review process. Delays in issuing the permit are to
be expected. Work may not proceed without the issuance of a permit. If it is determined by the Building

compliance with the adopted codes, the application may be placed behind more recent applications for
building permits in the review process and not reviewed until required information has been provided and the
application rotates again to first position for review, delay in issuance of the permit or delay in proceeding

Job No. 103 326
Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot 3, Kelly and
Michael Lyon Family LLC Exemption, County Road 235, Garfield
County, Colorado.
Dear Mr. Smith:
As requested, a representative of .Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
excavation at the subject site on May 30, June 2 and 11, 2003 to evaluate the materials
exposed for foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations
for the foundation design are presented in this report. The •services were performed in
accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Larnchattee
Custom Builders, Inc., dated May 16, 2003. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc.
previously conducted a geotechnical site assessment for the development and presented
our findings in a report dated October 1, 2001, Job No. 101 676.
The proposed residence will consist of a single story manufactured structure over a
partial basement level and crawlspace. The site is located on a west facing steeply
sloping hillside.
At the time of our initial visit to the site, the excavation was not complete. When
observed on June 2, the foundation excavation had been rough graded and cut in one
Ievel up to 18 feet below the adjacent ground surface. We observed the nearly complete
excavation on June 11, 2003. The materials exposed in the bottom of the excavation
consisted of weathered claystone-shale in the northern deeper cut area and cobbles and
boulders up to about 8 feet in size in a sandy clay matrix in the southern portion. The
upper 6 to 8 inches of the soils and bedrock were loose from the excavation equipment.
Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a sample of the weathered bedrock
taken from the site, shown on Figure 1, indicate the materials have low compressibility
under existing moisture conditions and Iight loading and a moderate to high expansion
potential when wetted under a constant light surcharge. A swelling pressure of about

7,000 psf was indicated from the test. No free water was encountered in the excavation
and the soils and weathered bedrock were slightly moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural rocky soil or bedrock
materials designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 4,000 psf with a minimum
dead load pressure of 1,000 psf can be used for support of the proposed residence. The
weathered bedrock appears to be expansive when wetted and there could be some post -
construction movement of the foundation if the bearing soils become wet. Precautions
should be taken to prevent wetting of the bearing materials. The movement would be
differential between footings bearing on the rocky soil and footings bearing on the
bedrock. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and
2 feet for columns. Loose disturbed soils and rock in the footing areas should be
removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils or
bedrock materials. Voids created by the removal of large rocks should be backfilled
with compacted sand and gravel, such as 3/4 -inch road base, or with concrete. Exterior
footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for
frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top artd bottom to
span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet.
Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral
earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 60 pcf for on-site
soils, excluding oversized rock, as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be
provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and
prevent wetting of the basement level. An impervious membrane such as 20 mil PVC'
should be placed beneath the drain gravel in a trough shape and attached to the
foundation wall with mastic to prevent wetting of the bearing materials. Structural fill
placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95%
of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around
the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at
least 10 feet of the building.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the
materials exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface
exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation
influence. This study is based on the assumption that materials beneath the footings
have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may

be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface
conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface
conditions below the excavation, driIIing would be required. It is possible the data
obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this
letter.
If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.

Subject: Percolation Testing, Proposed Septic Disposal System, Lot 3, Kelly and
Michael Lyon Family LLC Exemption, County Road 235, Garfield
County, Colorado.
Dear Mr. Smith:
As requested, Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc., performed percolation testing at the
subject site. We previously performed an observation of the excavation and presented our
findings in a letter dated June 11, 2003.
A Profile Pit and three percolation shallow backhoe pits had been excavated prior to our
arrival on-site at the locations shown on Fig. 1. Percolation test holes had been dug in the
bottom of the shallow backhoe pits, P-1 and P-2 and the profile pit, No test hole had been
dug in the bottom of P-3 due to hard claystone bedrock. A representative of Hepworth-
Pawlak Geotechnical soaked the test holes with water one day prior to testing. The
subsoils exposed in the Profile Pit consisted of about 5 feet of sandy clay with gravel and
cobbles overlying weathered claystone-shale bedrock to the bottom pit depth of 6 feet.
No free water was observed in the pit and the soils were slightly moist to moist.
Percolation testing was conducted on June 27, 2003, by a representative of Hepworth -
Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are summarized on Table 1. The
percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate between 60 and 120 minutes per inch
with an average of 100 minutes per inch. The tests were conducted in the weathered
bedrock. Based on the subs a€e-eorrdit Yr s-enca eyed, particularly the shallow
bedrock, we recommend mat a professional engineer bee aged to design the septic
disposal system.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office.
Sincerely,
