New Castle CO. General Contractor: DG Construction Inc. Contractor that Performed Work: TP1 Industrial Inc. Testing of shop fabrication or field work at job site: Field Report: Visually inspected the high strength bolting at the main frame connections. 314" diameter A325 bolts had been used at the connections above as shown on the drawings. The bolt tightness (pretension) had too be verified using a torque wrench per the arbitration procedure in section 10 of the AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts due to the fact that no inspection was performed during the bolt tightening process, and that the bolts & nuts had not been match marked to verify the proper nut rotation for the turn of the nut method of tightening. A testing torque was obtained using some sample bolts tested in a Wilhelm Skidmore bolt tension testing device. After the testing torque was obtained 1 tested two bolts in each main frame connection as specified in the arbitration procedure. As 1 started to test the bolts I found some of the bolts in the connections that were not adequately pretensioned (trot tightened enough). The metal building sub contractor then decided to go back over all of the bolts at the main frame connections using the torque wrench set to the proper testing torque, as 1 observed the tightening in process. After the retigthening was complete the bolting was then found to be acceptable per the AISC Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts.
