Onsite disposal systems are typically a septic tank followed by a leach field_ This type of onsite disposal system is approved for use in Garfield County. Pursuant to your request, Resource Engineering, Inc. (RESOURCE) reviewed the adequacy of your Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) that services a studio apartment 1 art studio located within a barn on your property located at 4006 County Road 115 in Garfield County.' The OWTSconsists of a 1.000 gallon septic tank and a leach field that has 462 feet of absorption area from 15 infiltrators and was previously permitted in 1996.2 There have been no reported problems with your OWTS, which indicates that it is functioning properly and is well maintained (i.e. septic tank pumping). To determine if the existing OWTS is suitable for the existing uses, RESOURCE examined the original calculations and sizing criteria and compared them with State of Colorado OVVIS regulations that were adopted by Garfield County in 2014 (Resolution No. 14-22). While these regulations only apply to new and repaired wastewater treatment systems, it provides for a useful tool in review the adequacy of the existing system as the calculations are different. Studio apartment occupancy is generally considered to be one bedroom or two persons with a design tiow totaling 150 gallons per day The required soil treatment area is a function of this design flow divided by the long terrn acceptance rate (LTAR) of the soil_ According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) web sail survey, sails in the area primarily consist of !cares and clay loams. These soil types are consistent with the percolation tests that were previously Conducted on the site and have a LIAR of 0.35 gallons per day per square foot. This equates to a sail treatment area of approximately 430 square feet The following table summarizes the required septic tank and leach field (pursuant to adopted 2014 regulations) and compares it to the as-construdted OWTS. Septic Tank (gallons) Adsorption Area (required) [installed) (reauiredl finstallett) c 1,000 1,000 430 sq. ft. 462 sq. ft. As shown in the table above, the OWTS is adequately sized for the studio apartment f art studio. The septic tank size is sufficient for a two to three bedroom accessory dwelling unit. ' A separate OWTS provides s4wwer service 10 the min residence, is properly sized, and is not the sub}ect of this report. Garfield GcFunty Building and Sanitation Department Perirtit No. 2592.
