Honorable Commis loners Of Garfield County
The purpose of this letter and simple outline is to give
all of you a better idea of what a golf practice range is, what
it is made up of and how the one I propose is to be operated.
A golf practice range or driving range as they are more com-
monly known,.: is a place where golfers can come to and rent a basket
of golf balls, usually in quantities k 25, 50, or 75 per basket,
take them to a tee box or hitting area and hit them toward a land-
ing area. In my case this landing area is adjacent to Ami's Acres
Campground and to the west. All ranges I have been to have yardage
signs posted down the middle of the landing area at intervals of
75, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 275 yards. I intend to have them also.
The golfers hit the balls toward these signs. They would use a club
called a wedge to hit toward the 50 yard sign, a seven or eight iron
for the 150 yard sign and a 1,2, or 3 wood toward the 250 yard sign.
By practicing these kind of shots a golfer can improve his game and
as they say "groove" his swing. Virtually all professional golfers
need and often use these ranges and must do so if they are to remain
competitive.
Glenwood has a lot of golfers per capita and all want a range
to use. I have even known people who don't play golf per-se, who
enjoy going to a range now and then. The range I am proposing is
a simple one. Basically I need to improve the road to the range by
widel.ng the road as it leaves the paved part to two lane, construct
a parking lot for say 15 cars, construct a tee box and practice put-
ting-chiping green, build a foot-path from the parking lot to the
tee-box. Near the tee-box area I will distribute balls from a pickup
truck. If the range proves to be a success then I would like to
erect a small shed or building, say 8foot by 10 foot , to serve as a
permanent ball distrubtion center. In this case I should have some
lighting around the building for security reasons.
The ball landing area has to be top-graded, flattened and seed-
ed this fall if I am to be able to open the range early next spring,
which is what I want to do. The ball landing area has to be flat
for two reasons. First- the machine I will use to pick up the balls
won't work on uneven ground and second- I need to be able mow the
grass close to the ground. Also along the south side of the ball
landing area I intend to install ball barrier netting on power poles.
I would also need to install some lighting on some if not all of
these poles to discourage the theft of balls at night. I don't
intend to have this range open at night the first year. Only if it
is a hue success would I consider operating it at night, possibly
from dark to 10:30 pm. I would like to recieve approval for some
type of non-offensive lighting but I really doubt that I will ever
install or use it.
I intend to operate this range myself, with possibly one employe,
The hours of operation will be from lam to dark every day. The way
it appears to me at this time, is that it is going to be a sixteen
hour a day job. I will have to irrigate the ball landing area once
every eight hours, pick up the balls, mow the tee-box, putting green,
and ball landing area, distribute the balls to the golfers, give
golfing lessons, perform all maintenance tasks and oversee security.
It is a large undertaking but I am prepared to give it a try. Any
specific questions you have remaining can and will be answered at the
public hearing on August 18, 1986.
Sincerely,
Richard Dever
