Sparse Sage Brush and natural vegetation covers the parcel. Drainage is from west to east in the area of interest. A natural drainage swale is approximately 100 feet north of the proposed septic area. This swale is only active during times of heavy rainfall. A percolation test/soils evaluation was completed on site by the Garfield County Building and Sanitation Department, David Mead, on December 10, 2003. In accordance with the results from this test, the following engineered design of an individual sewage disposal system (ISDS) has been prepared. Results from the 12/10/03 test are attached for reference as Appendix `A'. 2.01SDS Design Parameters The perc test excavation was extended to a depth of approximately 120" below the natural ground surface (BGS). There was no evidence of ground water or high seasonal water table in the open excavation to a depth of 120" BGS. The soils evaluation indicates soils underlying the site are relatively homogeneous. A more geological description follows: Depth (in.) Description 0"-120" medium -hard silty clay Three perc test holes were constructed and tested at varying levels BGS. Perc test results for the holes are as follows: Perc hole # Perc rate 1 40 minutes/inch 2 80 minutes/inch 3 80+minutes/inch **Average perc rate = 66 minutes/inch.** The average perc rate was utilized as the design perc rate, which is equal to 66 minutes/inch. The facility proposed on the parcel which will be utilizing the ISDS is a four (4) bedroom residential modular home approximately 1,700 S.F. in size. 3.0 ISDS Svstem Design An Infiltrator chamber absorption field is proposed for discharge of septic effluent at the site. As shown in the attached ISDS Site Plan, the Infiltrator chamber system will consist of (76) seventy-six standard infiltrator chambers for a total of 475.0 feet of trench. Each trench is 36" wide and approximately 36"-48" deep. Four trenches 93.75' long and one trench 100' long will be excavated and installed with infiltrators in series. A laser level shall be utilized during construction to ensure a level trench plane. Each Standard Infiltrator Chamber is 34" wide, 75" long, and 12" in height with a storage capacity of 77.5 gallons. Posi-Lock end plates will be utilized at the end of each trench chamber. Albright Residence ISDS Report Page 2 of 8 Vortex Engineering, Inc F04-001 Adjacent trenches shall be separated by a minimum of 6 feet horizontal distance of undisturbed soil. The infiltrators are to be installed in the center of each trench and level (end-to-end). The infiltrators are to terminate 12° from the ends of each trench. Septic effluent distribution piping to the absorption field will consist of a 4" PVC solid discharge line. As shown in the attached Plan and profile views of the Infiltrator system, the serial distribution connection between adjacent trenches will assure the up -gradient absorption trench is completely filled before effluent is discharged to each consecutive down -gradient absorption trench. Native soil will be used to backfill the trenches after the infiltrator systems have been installed. The native soil backfill will be mounded at least 5% over each trench to promote adequate surface drainage in the vicinity of the absorption system. The installer should confirm the feasibility of gravity discharge of sewage effluent form the structure to the absorption field by field verification of assumed design parameters. Assumed design parameters with respect to gravity discharge include, but are not limited to: A) Elevation of ground surface at entry to absorption field must be no less than 16" above the invert elevation of sewage pipe at exit from foundation line. B) The distance from the exit of the sewage pipe at the foundation line to absorption field is 110' or less. C) Solid distribution piping for the effluent is to be installed at a grade of 2% minimum. If field measurements do not confirm these design assumptions, gravity discharge of septic effluent from the proposed structure cannot be assured and a lift station may be required. Please contact the design engineer and GCHD to address any design modifications necessary if these design assumptions are not upheld. The installer must also confirm the setbacks from the property lines, building envelopes, streams, and existing easements shown in the attached plans are maintained. Additionally, any unknown utility lines, easements, or other adverse conditions disclosed during construction must maintain the required setbacks listed in Appendix 'B'. A 1,250 gallon septic tank is required for septic effluent from the proposed four bedroom home. As discussed above, an Infiltrator chamber system absorption field is proposed to discharge septic effluent to the underlying sub -surface. As depicted in the attached ISDS plan and profile drawings, the absorption field will consist of four trenches 93.75' long and one trench 100' long installed with infiltrators in series, each 3' wide and approximately 36"-48" deep. The total effective trench infiltration bed area is 2,356 square feet after reduction factors are applied. There will be 76 standard infiltrator units utilized for this Septic field. Calculations and design parameters used to size the Infiltrator Chamber system are as follows: Albright Residence ISM Report Page 3 of 8 Vortex Engineering, Inc F04-001 DESIGN CALCULATIONS AVERAGE SEWAGE FLOW FOR 4 BEDROOM HOME OF 150 GAL./BEDROOM-DAY 4 BEDROOMS X 150 GAL./BEDROOM-DAY = 600 GAL./DAY PEAK FLOW = 150% OF AVERAGE = 900 GAL./DAY DESIGN PERCOLATION RATE = 66.0 MIN./INCH A = Q/5*(4t), WHERE, A = ABSORPTION FIELD AREA Q= PEAK FLOW T= PERC TIME/INCH A = 900/5'J66.0= 1,462.32 SQUARE FEET INCREASE ABSORPTION AREA BY 40% FOR CLOTHES WASHER, AND 20% FOR GARBAGE DISPOSAL DESIGN AREA= 1,462.32 x 1.6 = 2,339.72 SQUARE FEET DECREASE TRENCH AREA BY 50% FOR INFILTRATOR CHAMBER SYSTEM TRENCH AREA REDUCTION ALLOWANCE ADJUSTED TRENCH AREA = 2,340 S.F. *(0.50) = 1,170 S.F. If at any time during construction, subsurface site conditions are encountered which differ from the design parameters developed in Section 2.0, construction activities will stop and the design engineer and Garfield County Health Department will be contacted to address any necessary design modifications. Installation procedures including grade, location, setbacks, septic tank size, and absorption field size shall conform with the attached graphic details. Construction activities and system components will not encroach upon existing easements or utility corridors. A minimum of 6 ft of undisturbed soil shall be maintained between individual absorption elements and the septic tank and//or adjacent absorption elements. • To avoid surface flow infiltration and saturation of the new absorption system, abandonment of irrigation in the vicinity of the disposal system is required. Diversion ditches necessary to divert surface flows around the new absorption bed must maintain the minimum setbacks listed above. • All sewer lines and effluent distribution piping shall be 4 inches in diameter, have glued joints, and employ a serial distribution connection between adjacent absorption trenches. Septic tank effluent lines shall b e placed level in the absorption field. All lines discharging sewage from the residence to the septic tank shall maintain fall of between 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. per foot and shall employ sweep 90's or 2-45's at all tums. Sewer lines from the dwelling to the septic tank and at least 6 ft from the septic tank outlet must meet minimum standard ASTM - 3034. Sewer lines under driveways shall always meet minimum Schedule 40 PVC standards and shall be encased with corrugated metal pipe when covered with less than 24" of soil. • The installer shall not place fill in the open excavation until inspected and approved by the design engineer. Additionally, the final cover shall not be placed on sewer lines, septic tank, or the absorption area until the system has been inspected and approved by the design engineer and the Garfield County Health Department. • The installer shall provide 48 hour notice to the engineer and the Garfield County Health Department for all required inspections. Albright Residence ISDS Report Page 5 of 8 Vortex Engineering, Inc F04-001 • The surface cap shall be mounded 5% over the absorption trenches to promote surface runoff. • The system contractor shall be aware of the potential for construction activities to reduce soil permeabilities at the site through compaction, smearing, and shearing. The following precautions and construction procedures should be employed during installation to minimize disturbance to native soils. I. Excavation should proceed only when the moisture content of the soil is below the plastic limit. If a sample of soil forms a rope instead of crumbling when rolled between the hands it is too wet and should be allowed to dry before excavation continues. II. Excavation and backfill equipment should work from the surface where at all practical to avoid compaction of the solids at depth. III. The bottom and sidewalls of the excavation should be left with a rough, open surface. The appearance should be that of broken or ripped soil as opposed to a sheared, smeared, or troweled surface. Any smoothed of smeared surfaces should be removed with a toothed rake or shallow ripper taking care to remove loose residues for the bottom of the trench by hand if necessary. IV. Care should be taken in placing fill materials in the excavation to avoid damaging the exposed soil surfaces. 4.2 Operation -Maintenance and Inspections • The owner shall install a structural barrier if necessary and take precautions to prevent vehicular traffic, excessive surface watering, accidental flooding, or other activities in the vicinity of the absorption field which may compact, saturate, or otherwise alter the subsurface soil parameters used in designing the septic system. • The owner will plant and maintain grass or other shallow rooted cover crop to prevent erosion and promote evapotranspiration over the absorption field. • The owner will inspect and maintain the required mounding and drainage away from the absorption field to prevent saturation from precipitation and surface flows. • To mitigate the generation of preferential flow channels which may compromise the operation of the system, the owner will inspect and prevent intrusion of burrowing animals and deep rooted plants into the absorption field. • The owner will conduct periodic maintenance of the septic system by removing accumulated sludge from the septic tank every 3-4 years or as necessary to prevent clogging of the absorption field.
