HomeMy WebLinkAboutEngineer's Review of Framing 05.23.2017S K PEIGHTAL ENGINEERS Ltd STRUCTURAL CONSULTANTS To: Adam Sahnow From: Strephen Peightal, PE Date: May 23, 2017 Re: Framing Review 1253 Kings Row Carbondale, CO MEMORANDUM Item 1: Upper Exterior Balcony The existing balcony is framed with four double 2 x 10 joists spaced 5 -feet on center, and cantilevered 6 -feet from the south exterior wall, with a 13 -feet backspan. The rim is a 2 x 10 plus 2 x 12 beam. Short 2 x 10 joists span from the rim back to the exterior wall, spaced 16" +/- on center. Conclusion Based on a design Live Load 40 psf (match room served), and allowable stress values for the Douglas Fir/Larch #2 material, the 2- 2 x 10 joists are found to be about 40% overstressed. Recommend In order to meet allowable stress values, the 2- 2 x 10 joist cantilever can be cut back from 6 -feet to 5 -feet. 17013 M SKPE • 298 Park Avenue • #301 • Basalt, CO • 81621 • (970) 927-9510 • skpe@sopris.net
