(a) General. The provisions of this section shall govern the require- ments and uses of foam plastic insulation in buildings and structures. For trim, see Section 1705 (e). Except where otherwise noted in this section, all foam plastic insulation used in building construction shall have a flame -spread rating of not more than 75 and shall have a smoke -developed rating of not more than 450 when tested in the maximum thickness intended for use in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No, 42- 1. All packages and containers of foam plastic insulation and foam plastic insulation ingredients shall bear the label of an approved agency showing either the flame -spread rating and smoke -developed rating of the product at the thick- ness tested or the use for which the product has been listed. The interior of the building shall be separated from the foam plastic insulation by an approved thermal barrier having an index of 15 when tested in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 17-3. The thermal barrier shall be installed in such a manner that it will remain in place for the time of its index classification based upon approved diversified tests. (b) Specific Requirements. Unless otherwise specifically approved as pro- vided by Section 1712 (c) or by other sections of this code, foam plastic insulation may be used as follows: 1. Masonry or concrete construction. Foam plastic insulation may be used without the thermal barrier described above, regardless of' the type of construc- tion, when the foam plastic insulation is covered by a minimum of 1 -inch thickness of masonry or concrete in a wall, floor or roof system, 2. Attics and crawl spaces. Within an attic or crawl space where entry is_ made only for service of utilities, foam plastic insulation shall be protected against ignition by 11/2 -inch -thick mineral fiber insulation, 1/4 -inch -thick plywood, hard- board or gypsum wallboard, corrosion -resistant sheet metal having a base metal thickness not less than 0.0160 inch at any point, or other approved material installed in such a manner that the foam plastic is not exposed. 3. Cold storage construction. Foam plastic insulation installed and meeting the requirements of (a) above when tested in a thickness of 4 inches may be used in a greater thickness in cold storage buildings, ice plants, food-processing rooms and similar areas. For rooms within a building, the foam plastic insulation shall be protected by a thermal barrier on both sides having an index of 15. Foam plastic insulation may be used in freestanding cooler and freezer walls without the thermal barrier when the foam plastic insulation has a flame -spread rating of 25 or less when tested in a 4 -inch thickness, has a minimum allowable flash and self -ignition temperatures of 600°F and 800°F. , respectively, when tested in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 52-3, is covered by not less than 0.032 inch of aluminum or corrosion -resistant steel having a base metal thickness not less than 0.0160 inch at any point and is protected by an automatic sprinkler system. When such a cooler or freezer is within a building, both the cooler or freezer and that part of the building in which the room is located shall be sprinklered. >4 /_/,' i /4-11 i,: -.,_a.:_;__ -?'(ii, i2_e&-.--,___ ,_____, 0. -k -)ie z ...iere_c_. .._....‘_..._ / _-e------z-3-2 Gr. Y GARFIELD COUNTY BUILDING AND PLANNING MINIMUM APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS fo r SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING CONSTRUCTION including NEW CONSTRUCTION MANUFACTURED HOMES ADDITIONS ALTERATIONS and MOVED BUILDINGS In order to understand the scope of the work intended under a permit application and expedite the issuance of a permit it is important that complete information be provided. Adequate and complete information will prevent delays in the plan review process. Reviewing a plan and the discovery that required information has not been provided by the applicant may result in the delay of the permit issuance and in proceeding with building construction. The owner or contractor may be required to provide this information before the plan review may proceed. This causes delays because other plans that are in line for review may be given attention before the new information may be reviewed after it has been provided to the Building Department. Please review this document to determine if you have enough information to design your project and provide adequate information to facilitate a plan review. If you do not, it may be helpful to obtain a book titled "Dwelling construction under the Uniform Building Code. This book is available to you through this department at our cost. Also, please consider using a design professional for assistance in your design and a construction professional for construction of your project. Currently, the trusses are in place and are being used for the roof system. Using your sketched•drawing supplied to us, we have used the following information for design purposes. Framing members were presumed to be douglas-fir larch (north) and with the exception of the 2 x 6 bottom chord, constructed using 2 x 4's. Fastening consisted of using,6 - 6d nails at both sides of the 2 x 4 members and 10 - 6d nails at • both sides of the 2 x.6 members with_ 1 / 2" plywood gusset plates also located on both sides of the jointed areas. - In calculating the trusses, we have based the spacing to be at 16" on center, and 'used a - required snow live load for the area of 50psf and a material dead load of 15psf. In • applying these design load values to the truss, we have found the wood members to . meet general code criteria, but the existing number of nails at the jointed connections to be.under designed. We have included a drawing showing the required number of 6d nails to be used at each joint, each side, of the jointed members. • • If you have any questions, or if I can be of any further assistance please don't hesitate to call me.
