1. FOUNDATION
ATCO METAL LTD.
SERIES 4014 and 4018
40' FOLD-A-WAY
INSTALLATION AND ERECTION INSTRUCTIONS
.•
A concrete slab with preset %"round bolts 12" long is recommended. It is extremely important that the anchors be set
according to locations shown on drawing 4014-18-8 such that the outside to outside dimension of the erected building
will be 40' -0" .± Yz ". All foundations must be level and square prior to commencing erection of centre sections. In all
cases the outside to outside dimension must be 40' ± Yz ". A continuous bead of sealant will prevent moisture seepage.
2-ERECTION OF CENTRE SECTION
a. It is recommended that a crane with approximately forty feet of boom be used for centre section erection. The
same crane may be used for erecting the endwalls.
b. Offload centre sections using special sling. Place folded section on timber skids near its final erected location.
Skids are used to prevent damage to corrugated siding on the sidewall panels as the section is being unfolded.
c. Remove any endwall panels that may be stored inside the centre section by sliding them out. Then hook sling at
eave end of folded section and unfold as shown in Step # 1 on Drawing # C-4010. Place timber skids under wall
panel as shown in Step # 1 .
d. Remove nuts and washers holding wall and roof panels together (four per section). Now hook the spreader bar to
the inside of the hinges between the two roof panels. (See Step # 2 on Drawing #C-4010). Now raise the panels
about five or six feet and install peak strut at one end. Then proceed to raise section to the point where the other
end of the strut can be secured. (See Step #3 on Drawing #C-4010.) Struts are installed by sliding end of strut
over pin and then secured with flat washer and cotter pin. Peak and eave struts are the same length of 1 O' 5"
overall.
e. Secure one end of the eave struts to the roof panel pins leaving other end free. Now raise centre section to where
the sidewall panels hang vertical and eave struts may be secured to wall pin. Make sure washers and cotter pins
are installed and the pins opened after struts are installed.
f. Unfolded centre sections may now be hoisted onto the foundation. Note that all centre sections are equal, there-
fore, any centre section may be used at any location in the building. It is recommended, however, that the first
centre erected be located at one end of the building. '
Where a wood bean foundation is being used, it is extremely important to ensure that each centre section is square
and true with the outside to outside dimension at each end of the section being 40'-0" + W'. A di~onal measure-
ment should also be taken prior to securing base angle to foundation with %" x 4" lag bolts. All fotmdations are to
be capable of withstanding reactions shown as specifications.
g. Subsequent centre sections may now be erected using the same procedure and butted against the first centre
section. It may be necessary to use the line-up bar or spud wrench to align the channels so bolts can be inserted.
Standard Y:i'' round by 1 %" machine bolts are supplied to fasten sections together. Secure base angles to found-
ation as erection of centre section proceeds. It is recommended that a check for squareness be made at every
section. Because of the dead weight of the section the outside to outside dimension at the base will be less than
40'-0" while suspended by crane. Force the section open and ensure that erection dimension is 40'-0" ±_ Yz".
3. ERECTION OF ENDWALLS
a. Endwall panels and sliding door panels are generally shipped inside the folded centre sections. These are removed
as the centre sections are unfolded and erected. Each panel is identified with a letter, e.g.: Panel "A", "B", etc.
Drawing 4010-18-1 shows the location of the panels.
b. Endwall erection may commence as soon as It is ascertained that the centre sections are square and level. Endwall
panels are equipped with steel connection plates predrilled to match holes in centre section. panels. lifting of
endwall panels is facilitated by Inserting Yz" eyebolt in hole provided in top of each panel.
c. Start with panels "A" or "D". Raise into proper position and bolt into place using the %"round x 1 %"machine bolts
supplied. Leave bolts loose. Then raise panels "B" or "C" into position against panels "A" or "D" and centre section
roof channel and bolt Into place using the %"round x 1 %"machine bolts supplied for securing to adjacent panel. A
%"round x 1 Y2" machine bolt is used at the roof channel. Leave bolts loose.

Truss panel "E" is equipped with a lifting lug and may now be raised into position. Bolt to roof channel using %"
round x 1 'lz" machine bolts. Do no tighten bolts.
In the case of a blank endwall (no sliding door), panels "F" (3 are required) may now be installed using %"round x
1 'lz" machine bolts supplied. Endwall panels should now be lined up on the foundation and several now be lined up
on the foundation and several tie-down bolts(%" round lag screw, eg.) may be installed. Now proceed to tighten all
bolts and install remaining tie-down bolts, shimming if necessary.
If the endwall being erected is equipped with a sliding door, the door track should now be installed. Panels are
predrilled to receive track bolts. Install door track with the welded stop facing out so that bolted stops are located
over centre of door opening. Use the %" round x 2%" machine bolts supplied. Be sure that %" pipe spacer is
installed between door track angle and endwall framing. Be sure that door track is installed level. Endwall panels
should now be lined up on the foundation and tie-down bolts installed. Now tighten all bolts, including door track
bolts.
NOTE: Install flashings #40·3 and 40·4 prior to installing door track. See flashing installation Instructions for
details.
g. To install sliding cargo doors, first remove angle stop secured with two bolts at centre of track. Install rollers at top of
sliding door leaves and slide complete units into place. Replace bolted angle stops. Clearances may be adjusted by
raising or lowering individual rollers. Door stay rollers may be adjusted for smooth operation.
4_ FLASHING INST ALL TION
a. All flashings are paced inside of folded centre sections and are removed at time of erection. All screws ( # 14 x 1" self-
tapping) are supplied and must be installed in accordance with the number required and centres as detailed on the
flashing schedule included in these instructions.
b. One or more rolls of 1" insulation is shipped with the building for installation under the flashings. Insulation should be
slit lenghthwise as follows:
1. for 11" corrugated flashings 9" wide
2. for corner flashings 1 2" wide
3. for ridge cap 14" wide
Quantities of each width should be determined in the field. It is preferable to slit the insulation as flashing installation
proceeds. Cut insulation with sharp knife or hand-saw.
c. The 11" corrugated flashings and adjacent sidewall and roof panel are installed first. The 9" strip of insulation may be
temporarily taped on for ease of installation. Flashings are screwed near the edges in accordance with details on the
flashing schedule. Read the flashing schedule in conjunction with drawing 4010-18-1.
d. All 11" corrugated flashings may now be installed on the endwalls on the locations shown on Drawing 4010-18-1.
Screw into place in accordance with information on flashing schedule. Flashing # 40-28 and # 40-29 may be installed
at underside of truss panel "E".
e. When all corrugated flashings have been installed, the corner flashings # 40-25 and # 40-26 may be installed.
Overlaps (if any) should always point downward. Secure in accordance with flashing schedule.
f. At this point, end caps and ridge caps may be installed. Insulation under ridge cap should be stretched relatively taut
opening to prevent sagging. Ridge cap pieces are designed to lap six inches. Sealant may be used (if desired) to
ensure a moisture proof joint.
g. Install flashing over sliding door track # 40-39 and # 40-40.
NOTE: As all screws supplied to secure flashings are hex head, self.tapping, an electric screw gun will save
considerable time during the flashing operation.
