q/?1° Cf On 9/30/93, I was sent by Jim McMurrey to look at a "Pole Barn" built for a boat without a
permit.
Pole barns do not require a permit or inspections if they are built on farms or ranches for the
sole use of agriculture, such as storage of hay and other grown crops as well as farm machinery.
If truck and pickups, other licensed vehicles (boats), are stored in it, we require a permit, before
construction and regular inspection made throughout construction.
At this time, I observed a pole barn type construction, approximately 15' x 30' and
approximately 12' high, five (5) poles per side, estimated at 6" or 7" in diameter, with a like pole
on top of each side to be used as a plate to fasten and rest the trusses on.
Items seen at the time:
1. Poles resting on concrete. No way to ascertain how much, how deep, if any
reinforcement was used {U.B.C. Sec. 2516)
2. Poles have no fastening devices, to pole plate or trusses to pole plate, other than
nails. Nothing to hold the roof structure together such as hurricane clips or straps
(U.B.C. Sec. 2517)
3. Trusses do not appear to be make in a truss plant, they carry no stress stamps
plywood guesset plates and no stress graded lumber (40# snow load -U.B.C. Sec.
2305)
Based on the above items, Garfield County cannot issue a Certificate of Occupancy and will
only issue one after the owner has a licensed Engineer send us his stamped evaluation that the
building meets Garfield County and Uniform Building Code {U.B.C.) standards.
