Mr. Bob Brownlee Cross Creek Contractors, Inc. PO Box 1145 Gypsum CO 81637 RE: ISDS Design Report -Faranhyll Ranch Parcel 1 Dear Bob: March 13, 2003 Resource Engineering, Inc. (RESOURCE) has designed an individual sewage disposal system (ISDS) for the proposed residence on Parcel 1, Faranhyll Ranch in Garfield County. This letter summarizes the design presented on the attached Figure 1 and 2. DESIGN FLOW The proposed residential structure is designed with three bedrooms and a studio. For purposes of design, we have assumed four bedrooms with two people per bedroom each requiring 75 gallons per day. The average daily flow is estimated at 600 gallons per day. The design flow, using a peaking factor of 1.5, is estimated at 900 gallons per day. SEPTIC TANK SIZING The septic tank size is based on 30 hours of detention time or a minimum of 1,250 gallons for a four bedroom residence. The volume required based on detention is 1, 125 gallons. Therefore, a 1,250 gallon, two compartment tank, is required for the project. PERCOLATION RATE A soil profile hole and percolation test pits were excavated by HP Geotech. The soil profile includes approximately 12 inches of top soil, 18 inches of sandy clay, and clayey gravel with basalt cobbles and boulders. Percolation tests conducted by HP Geotech indicate a percolation rate of 80 minutes per inch. This rate is relatively slow, but suitable for a conventional soil absorption system. SOIL ABSORPTION SYSTEM A soil absorption system using a trench configuration with graveless chambers (infiltrator) is proposed for the project. Based on the conventional formula for pipe and gravel trench absorption systems, the minimum area required is 1,610 square feet. As recommended in the State guidelines for ISDS systems, the minimum required area is increased by 40% due to the use of a garbage disposal, clothes washer, and dishwasher, resulting in a minimum required area of 2,254 square feet. Use of a graveless chamber system increases the active absorption area and allows for a 50% reduction in the calculated area pipe and gravel system. Therefore, the minimum required area is 1, 127 square feet, which requires 61 standard infiltrator units. Consulting Engineers and Hydrologists SOS Colorado Avenue • Glenwood Springs, CO 81 601 • (970) 945-6777 • Fax (970) 945-1137 -. Mr. Bob Brownlee Page2 SYSTEM LAYOUT . March 13, 2003 The absorption trench area has a ground slope of approximately 13%. Level trenches will be installed along the contours and stepped down as required by the slope. A total of 6 trenches are proposed for the absorption system. There will be 3 equally distributed parallel systems consisting of two rows in series (see Figure 1). A clean out wye will be installed outside of the house since the distance to the septic tank is more than 10 feet from the house. PIPELINE All sewer pipelines are to be installed in a bedded trench with compacted granular bedding and compacted native backfill. The maximum rock size in native backfill is 2 inches near the pipe and 6 inches in the remainder of the fill. Care must be taken to property support the pipelines at the house and in and out of the septic tank. A trench detail is shown on Figure 2. SETBACKS The proposed ISDS meets all ISDS setback requirements. These include 119 feet (100 foot minimum) from the absorption trench to the well, 50 feet (25 feet minimum) from the absorption trench to the dry gulch, 500 feet (10 feet minimum) to the nearest property line, and 50 feet (10 feet minimum) to the house. (RESOURCE). The design calculations, plans and specifications are included in a March 13, 2003 letter report prepared by RESOURCE. The ISDS system was installed in mid June 2003. An inspection of the construction was completed on June 24, 2003 by Michael Erion. The system was backfilled after a few minor corrections including leveling of the distribution box and proper bedding of the distribution header pipe.
