Box 683, Carbondale, Colorado 81623 ® 970-963-2339 June 21, 2006 Andy Schwaller Garfield County Building and Sanitation Department 108 8th Street Glenwood Springs, Co 81601 Re: Townsley Addition ISDS permit Dear Andy, This is the project you and I discussed on the phone last week. The Townsleys are replacing their existing system, sized for two bedrooms, with a new system sized for three bedrooms. The leach field will be built to accommodate a future fourth bedroom. The existing 1000 gallon tank will be relocated to serve the three bedroom house. When and if the fourth bedroom is built, it will be in a separate garage apartment, which will have its own 1000 gallon septic tank, feeding into the distribution box for the leach field. The issue is that the new leach field will overlap with the existing gravel bed, installed in 1985.1 showed the plans to Tim Petz, of All Service Septic and got his advice on how this should be done. He says that as long as the existing system has not failed (which it hasn't), there is no reason why the new system cannot be placed right on top of it. In this case, we would be placing two or three feet of dirt on top of the existing system, and then placing the Infiltrator units on top of that. Timsays the existing ground should be scarified so that the effluent will soak in better, and the new dirt placed in one foot lifts and compacted lightly. The new perc tests would be done in that new dirt. (If there is three feet or less of new dirt, then the perking would actually be taking place in the existing dirt.) Tim says that removing the old gravel would be a problem, because it could not be taken to an ordinary landfill. I suppose John could load it into Old Green and haul it to Mexico (just kidding), but short of that I don't know how we'd dispose of it properly. Is Tim's verbal opinion good enough, or would you prefer to have a letter from an engineer saying that what we propose to do is okay? If you need a letter, Tim can get me one. But if it isn't necessary, I'd like to save the Townsleys the additional expense. Thanks for your help with this. ..1 GARFIELD COUNTY SU(LDING AND SANITATION DEPARTMENT 2014 Blake Avenue Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601 Phone (303) 945-8241 REPAIR ONLY FEE FOR FERC ONLY INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL PERMIT 1 444 Owner Tom !lesson System Location CP - 16t)5 1 This does not constitute a building or use permit. 9180 117 Road Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601 Licensed Installer C 1 r# Conditional Construction approval is hereby granted for a 7 S 0 >S Septic Tank or Aerated treatment unit.
