Re: Proposed Log Home Residence Foundation
Lot 16, Cedar Hills Ranch
Garfield County, Colorado
Project No. 2003-215.001-01
Dear folks:
Per your request, Schmueser Gordon Meyer has designed a septic system to service the
residential flows from a proposed residence located on Lot 16, Cedar Hills Ranch, Garfield
County, Colorado. Based upon our discussion, we understand that the ISDS will be designed to
serve a three-bedroom home. Please refer to the attached site plan.
In our calculations we have used values of average daily flow for a residence with customary
fixtures and appliances. We have sized the system for a clothes washer and garbage disposal. If
you anticipate using any equipment, which would significantly differ from this assumption, we will
need to revise the design to handle the additional flow. The design has been based on soils
reports by HP Geotech (Job No. 102 569, September 9, 2002), which includes the results of
percolation tests performed. The soil profile described in the September 9, 2002 report revealed in
the profile pit excavated for the septic system; 1 foot of top soil overlying sandy to very sandy clay
to a depth of 8 feet. No evidence of ground water was encountered. The results of the percolation
tests by HP Geotech varied widely. A near by alternate site was selected and the County
Sanitarian performed percolation tests on October 1, 2003. From that test, Permit No. 3844, the
percolation rate was determined to be 40 minutes per inch.
For the leach field, we have sized a commonly used conventional absorption bed consisting of
parallel trenches with "Equalizer 36" units. The system components must comply with setback
requirements in accordance with Colorado State Health Department regulations (see attachment).
A detailed summary the system components follows a description of the overall system. All
system components shall comply with Garfield County and Colorado State Health Department
regulations. No vehicular access shall be allowed over the system components not specifically
designed to handle traffic.
The system shall consist of piping to convey the effluent, by gravity, from the dwelling to a two-
compartment septic tank. In the septic tank solids will settle out. Effluent from the septic tank is
then piped, by gravity, to the leach field where it is absorbed into the soil.
Piping shall generally consist of 4" ASTM 3034 PVC pipe with watertight joints. Piping shall be
straight in alignment and straight in grade. A cleanout will be required near the residence, at any
change in alignment and/or grade and a cleanout at a minimum of every 100'. The grade of the
pipes must be a minimum of 1 /4" per foot. All piping shall have a minimum cover of two (2) feet.
Any piping exposed to vehicular traffic shall be 4" Schedule 40 PVC, sleeved to protect it from
damage.
A two-compartment septic tank with a minimum capacity of 1000 gallons, as specified by Garfield

County, shall be placed no closer than 5' from the dwelling. Soil conditions and the absence of
ground water will permit the use of various tank materials, the most common choices being
concrete and fiberglass. The tank shall be placed on undisturbed native soil to minimize any
settling which could potentially damage the inlet or outlet piping.
The leach field for the system utilizes parallel trenches with "Equalizer 36" units. In this case, we
would recommend that of 4 infiltrator trenches be installed with 11 infiltrators per trench; see the
attached calculations. In these calculations, we have taken the 50% reduction in area allowed by
Garfield County for this type of system. In order for this to be a valid reduction in size of the
system, system components must be installed with the utmost care. The proper installation is
extremely important in order for the system to perform satisfactorily over the long term. The
closest spacing that the infiltrator units can be installed is 10 feet on center. It is imperative for the
proper function of the system that, the infiltrator units be placed in a flat, level trench. The
"Infiltrator" units must be installed in an excavated trench in native material and not in fill. We
recommend that 4" diameter vents be installed at the end of each infiltrator trench as indicated on
the attached schematic. The vents will also serve as inspection ports. The attached Installation
Instructions describes the vent/ port installation.
We have attached a schematic, which identifies the typical piping requirements to equally
distribute flow to each of the infiltrator trenches. Several piping options are shown. Since the equal
distribution of the flow is very important, provided that the septic tank can be located relatively
close to the trenches, we would recommend that each trench be piped directly from the septic
tank to each individual trench. Alternately you could use a level header pipe or a separate
distribution box.
We have attached the manufacturer's literature regarding the infiltrator system. The
manufacturer's literature includes a detailed list of instructions for the installation of the septic
system. Native material may be used as backfill as long as 6" and larger rock is excluded. The
minimum required cover is 12" over the infiltrator system. The maximum final depth of the system
is 42"; therefore, grading to remove any excess overburden will be necessary. Do not drive on the
leach field. Slope the cap on the leach field to direct surface water around and away from the field.
General Notes:
1. All materials, installation practices and setback requirements shall comply with
Garfield County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations.
2. No portion of the system shall be placed in fill. Once backfilled, provide positive
drainage away from the leach field.
3. The area disturbed by construction, shall be reseeded by native grasses to prevent
erosion.

4. Use risers as needed to bring septic tank access hatches within 6" of finished
grade.
5. Locate septic tank to provide adequate access to the tanks for pumping.
6. The Contractor and Owner shall take whatever measures are necessary to assure
that (a) the septic tank and sewer lines are completely watertight to prevent
infiltration of groundwater in the system, and (b) the system is installed to prevent
freezing of the gravity sewer lines. No irrigation to be allowed over the infiltrators.
7. The Engineer and Garfield County Sanitation Department shall be notified when
construction commences and kept abreast of the construction progress so that
sufficient inspections and observations can be performed to assure conformance
with this design.
8. It is the Contractor's responsibility to verify all locations of utilities and setbacks that
may be affected by the installation of the septic system. Verification of all utility
locations shall be made with the appropriate utility company.
9. Substitution of materials (i.e., pipe, tanks, etc.) is acceptable, provided verification
and acceptance by the Engineer and the Garfield County Sanitation Department is
made.
If you have any questions or comments, please call.
Sincerely,

INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM
CALCULATIONS
1. Determine flows:
3-bedrooms in proposed residence
2 persons/bedroom
75 gpd/person
Total average daily flow= (3)(2)(75) = 450 gpd
2. From soils report: Percolation rate for design 40.0 mpi
3. Required septic tank capacity:
For a 3-bedroom home = 1000 gallons
4. Peak flow at 150% per Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment Regulations.
1.5 x 450 gpd =675 gpd
5. Determine Absorption Area Required:
For absorption:
Where A = field area
Q =flow rate
T = percolation
A= [(Q)SqRt(T)] / 5
A= [(675)SqRt(40)] / 5
A= 855 SF

Re: Observation of the construction of an Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS)
Proposed Log Home Residence
Lot 16, Cedar Hills Ranch
Garfield County, Colorado
Project No. 2003-215.001-01
Dear Folks:
At about 11 :00 AM on October 17, 2003, at your request, I made a visual observation of the
construction of your ISDS.
All of the trenching was open; "Infiltrators" had been placed in all four trenches. The pre-cast concrete
septic tank was in place but the piping was not yet completed. A distribution box and the distribution
piping were on site and being installed. -----
All items I visually observed were being installed as described in our letter for the design of the
system dated October 14, 2003. No measurements were made to verify the exact location of the
system. We have assumed that you have performed these operations in accordance with the infiltrator
manufactures specifications and requirements as well as complying with Garfield County Regulations.
It appears that the system has been constructed as designed, conforming to the State and County
regulations governing such systems.
Should you have any questions concerning the above, please call me at 970-945-1004.
