COLORADO September, 2003 Prepared for: Dave Argo 121 Hideaway Lane Glenwood Springs, CO, 8160 I 970-945-6738 Prepared By: Alpine Engineering P.O. Box 97 Edwards, Co 81632 970-926-3373 Glenn Palmer Introduction: A single family residence was constructed approximately 30 years ago, 011 a Tract Situated In The NE'!. SW \I, of Section 2, Tov.nship 6 South, Range 89 West of the 61 " Principal Meridian, Garfield County, Colorado. The lot is located in the area kno\\TI as No Name, Garfield County, Colorado approximately 2 miles east ofGlemrnod Springs, on 1-70 and is approximately 0.3116 acres. The house was purchased by the Argos in 1994. The existing septic system appears to consist of a cistern, where the building sewer discharges to an underground vault (appears to be concrete block), which is perforated to allow infiltration into the adjacent ground. Last year sometime, the sewer partially backed up, and the Argos had the cistern pumped. Since that time, the cistern has been monitored for effluent levels in the cistern. The effluent level appears to remain fairly constant, regardless of the amount of use, near the top of the cistern and about 6 '· below the sewer pipe coming from the house. lt is my opinion that it is only a matter of time before the cistern is overloaded, and an immediate repair is required. Therefore, the Argo's have chosen to repair the system proactively, prior to an outright failure. The house, as well as other houses in the No Name area, get their water from a community ''ater system, which is piped to their house: there is not a well on the property. No Name Creek is located on the southern side of the parcel. Proposed Repair: The existing sewer line exits the building on the west side of the house, where ground level is at the basement level such that the sewer I ine is approx. 2 to 3 feet deep. A prefabricated, packaged sewage lift station is proposed to be installed just upstream of the existing cistern, and a force main run up to a new septic tank which will be located at a location where it is more accessible for maintenance and pumping. The Septic tank will gravity drain to a bed absorption system ("Infiltrators"), whose location is primarily based upon meeting stream, water service, lot line, and other setback requirements. A bed system is proposed as a result of the additional space required for a trench system. proposed Use: The house is a 3 bedroom house. Proposed Septic Tank Size: 3 bedrooms at 2 person/bedroom at 75gpd/person at 150% peak =675 gpd 675 gpd x 30/24 =843 gallons. Use a 1000 gallon, two compartment, Amcor (concrete) traffic rated septic tank: Percolation Test Results: (Last l 0 minutes of results of a I hour percolation test, with pre-wet holes) The holes were ]Cleated in the area of the proposed absorption area (both vertically and horizontally), at approximately 2.5 feet deep. The percolation rate never exceeded 5 MP! during the 1 hour test. I like to use the last I 0 minutes of the I hour perc. test where the pcrc. rates are somewh:it slower due to less amount of water depth (and Pressure "head"), thus providing conservative results for design. 2 Hole # 1: 10 min/( 17. 75" -19 .25"")= 6. 7 minutes per inch Hole #2: l 0 min/(2 l .S"-22.625")= 8.9 mimttes per inch Hole #3 10 min/(16.25"-17.125")=1 l .4 minutes per inch Average= (6. 7+8. 9+ 11. -1)13= 9 min11tes per inch. Use the Garfield County Chari using 10 mi nu/es per inch. Required Absorption Area, SF 3 bedrooms at 228 square feet per bedroom requires 684 square feet of absorption area. For a bed ''Infiltrator" brand absorption system. a 40% reduction is allowed on the bed area, (684 -40% of 684) = 410 square feet required. 410 sf I 18. 75 sf/infiltrator unit = 22 (3J"cct x 6.25ft) l nfiltrator Units Soil Profile Hole: It is requested to provide the soil profile hole immediately prior to the construction of the new septic system, where a special trip will not be required for the backhoe. The location of the proposed absorption area does not appear that groundwater, bedrock. or other impermeable soils will be encountered within 8 feet of depth, or within 4 feet below the bottom of the infiltrators, but a soil profile hok will be completed to verify. Sewage Pump: The sewage pump is proposed to be located outside of the building. due to lack of adequate room and accessibility within the crawl space. A small package system (vault. pump, controls, slide rail, etc), is proposed to limit disturbance and improve the constructability of the system. The most cost effective, reliable system with backup may be to pro\'ide two simplex pump stations with a bull valve upstream of the pumps, so that if one pump failed, the other pump could be used while the first pump is being repaired. Otherwise, a motor saver or control system could be provided on one pump system to indicate impending pump problems, to repair prior to failure. Force main (pumps to septic tank) 2-2.5" diameter schedule 40 pvc pipes are proposed from the pumps to the septic system. One pipe would be for each pump vault. Bends should be restrained, either by concrete thrust blocks or otherwise. The force main should not have any low points along the line: one low point at the pump/sand one high point at the septic tank. A minimum of l % slope up from the pumps should be provided. The force main should be insulated if less than 4 feet of cover is provided, or the pipe should be allowed to dwin back to the pump \'ault (by drilling a 1;;· hole in the pipe discharging within the vault, or if the pump does not have a check valve and allows efllucnt to drain back to the vault, no hole would be necessary. It is recommended that the force main pipe/s be insulated in any case. A single pump will provide 20gpm m 16 feet TDH (total dynamic head). At 20 gpm, l 00 linear feet of2.5" ID schedule 40 PVC pipe will have l foot of friction loss, so that 15 feet of maximum elevation head is available from the pump to the tank. The tank will need to be placed approximately 3.5 feet deep to the top of tank, with concrete risers to 3 bring the access ports up to grade. The J 000 gallon tank is approx 5 feet deep, so that a 8.5 foot cut to the bottom of tank will be required. Elevations from the pump to the septic tank inlet should be verified during construction. A 3 "force main (schedule -10 PVC) could also be used, 11'hich 1rould allow an additional 6" ()f elevation (to raise the seplic tank up another 6 '")The conrracror should verify elevations in the field, prior to purchasing of pipe mmerials. Setback Requirements: Absorption Bed to Potable Water Line; 25 feet Absorption Bed to occupied building; 10 feet Absorption Bed to Property Lines; I 0 feet Absorption Bed to Streams; 50 feet Absorption Bed to Septic Tank; I 0 feet Septic Tank to Absorption Bed; I 0 feet Septic Tank to Stream; 50 feet Existing Cistern Abandonment The existing cistern should pumped (empty) and then filled with sand or dirt. 4 F ~n0 e:r 0.~.w. Contact Alpine Engineer, Inc. at least 48 hours prior to installing any septic system improvement. 2. Compact sewer trenches to 90% standard proctor density or per soils engineer's recommendations. 3. Provide risers on septic tanks and manhole section on pump vaults to finish grade 4. Comply with all Garfield County and Colorado Department of Health regulations regarding septic system installation. 5. Provide inspection portals per Garfield County regulations. 6. Provide 4ft minimum cover or insulate and 2% minimum slope from building to septic tank. 7. Provide cleanouts at bends. 8. Gravity sewer line to be PVC SOR 35. 9. Bottom of absorption bed to be level. 10. Install infiltrator system per manufacturer recommendations and Garfield County Health Department requirements. 11. Do no begin sewer construction prior to notification of Alpine Engineer, Inc., Glenn Palmer 970-926-3373. The septic system is also to be inspected by Alpine Engineering, Inc. prior to backfill. Contact them for this purpose as well. 12. We recommend that the disposal field be seeded after installation of the subsurface disposal system. A good native grass cover will promote evapotranspiration from the field. We recommend used a seed mix such as Foothills, Pasture or Prairie mix available at local feed and seed stores. These mixes do no require irrigation and develop a growth of 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed above the disposal field. 13. The Owner must realize an onsite sewage disposal system is considerably different from public sewer services. The Owner must be aware of and assume the responsibility for continued maintenance of the system. We recommend the pumping of the septic tank at the end of the first year to monitor sludge accumulation and a minimum of two years afterward. There are also daily considerations; such as not putting plastic or other non- biodegradable material down the sewage disposal system. Also, water used must be carefully monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, it should be noted that a running toilet would consume in excess of 1000 gallons per day if allowed to run. Excessive loading (such as from running toilets) will flood and irrevocably harm the system and stress the onsite well (if present)_ 14. Provide minimum 10ft separation between water and sewer lines, or encase per Colorado Department of Health regulations_ 15. Provide two ties to sewer cleanouts, septic tank, and absorption trench corners as required by Garfield County for as-builts. ,,. --00 Double-Trunk 11' Cottonwood 88 -r.. « Fenced Property BoundarY APP~OX LOCATION OF EJCISTING sEYTICThttK. - ~ ...... -.......
