Subject: Tower Shelter Building Review
1885 County Road 319, Rifle, Colorado
Lindauer Dunn, Inc. Job No. 18.101
Dear Mike:
We have reviewed the structure of the 20'x8'x8' steel shipping container for use as a
shelter building at an antenna site, based upon the structural information provided by the
manufacturer.
The 1.6mm (16 ga.) steel deck material used for the roof of the container is adequate for a
snow load of 50 p.s.f. for the 8 foot single span of the container roof. The steel deck
material is also adequate for the walls of the container to vertically support the roof deck
and to resist wind loads from ultimate wind speeds of 115 m.p.h. with Exposure C.
If a permanent foundation is not required, the container may be set on 12" minimum of
compacted structural fill material, with proper grading to ensure drainage away from the
shelter. The shelter should be anchored at each corner with manufactured home tie -down
anchors having single 6" diameter or double 4" diameter helices, embedded 48"
minimum into undisturbed native soils.
If permanent foundations are needed, each corner post of the container should bear on
18" diameter concrete piers embedded 36" minimum or to frost depth, and reinforced
with (6) #5 vertical bars. The container corner posts should be anchored to the concrete
piers with Simpson type "HDSB" or equivalent holdowns.
