Re: Boulder Retaining Walls
50 Cliffrose Way
Pinyon Mesa Subdivision
THE FOLLOWING WAS OBSERVED:
The purpose of this field observation was to observe the completed construction of a series of
drystack boulder retaining walls adjacent to the residence.
At this time the house construction is complete and the adjacent boulder retaining walls are
complete. On the south side of the house the wall is a two tier boulder wall. On the east side of
the house, directly adjacent to the property line, the boulder wall is approúmately 90 feet long.
The north most 30 feet of wall is a single tier that is less than 4 feet tall. The next section is 20
feet long and is a single tier which is approximately 4'-6" tall. The southernmost is a two tier wall
by approximately 20 feet long.
Both the east boulder wall and the south boulder wall are well constructed and have been built
with a below grade 'French drain.' At the southeast corner of the boulder wall system the final
subgrade has been cut approximately 16" to 18" below the boulder bearing elevation. I
recommend that an additional lower course of boulders (approximately 2 foot square) be installed
at the base of the eústing wall at this corner. The additional lower course should extend
approximately 13 feet to the west and 15 feet to the north, respectively, from the southeast
corner.
A,ll other aspects of the boulder wall construction are structurally acceptable.
