Percolation Tests, Valley
Commercial Plaza, Highway 82,
South of Glenwood Springs,
Garfield County, Colorado.
Job No. 15,152
As requested, we performed percolation tests at the subject site
August 25, 1977.
The site is located east of Highway 82, approximately 5 miles
south of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The site of the proposed leaching
field was selected by the owner and is located on the west side of the
commercial building presently under construction. Soils in this area
consist of 10 to 15 feet of man-made fill extending west and north to
the new access road. Fill soil consists of silty, sandy clays with
gravel and cobbles. Fill slopes to the west and east generally are on
the order of 2:1, horizontal to vertical.
Two profile holes and three percolation test holes were drilled
with a 4 -inch diameter continuous flight power auger. The locations and
graphic logs of the profile and typical percolation test holes are shown
in Figs. 1 and 2.
The percolation tests were conducted in accordance with the require-
ments of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. No free water
was encountered in the profile holes at the time of our investigation.
The percolation test results presented in Table i indicate a
percolation rate at test locations 2 and 3 of 40 to 50 minutes per Inch;
however, no percolation rate could be established for test No. 4. We
were unable to maintain a water level in this hole due to apparent voids
within the fill. Based on our test results, a leach field constructed

in the area Investigated should be designed for a percolation rate on
the order of 50 minutes per inch. We suggest that the stability of the
fill slope be carefully investigated prior to any construction of a
leaching field septic system.
