OWTS Design Report 01.28.2019
ALL SERYICE^ 33 Four Wheel Drive Rd Carbondale, Co 81623 970-309-5259 January 28, 2019 Max Filiss max@dividecreekbuilders.com Subsurface Investigation and Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Design 4 -Bedroom Cabin Cabin 2 Parcel 398 CR 136 Garfield County, Colorado Max, Project No. C1429 -B ALL SERVICE septic, LLC performed a subsurface investigation and completed an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) design for the subject cabin. A 4 -bedroom cabin is currently developed on Cabin Parcel 2 (Parcel ID 2123-122-00-002). The 35.01 -acre property is located outside of New Castle, in an area where OVVTSs and wells are necessary. SITE CONDITIONS A 4 -bedroom cabin presently exists on Cabin Parcel 2. The system serving the 4 -bedroom cabin appears to be a cinder block cesspool with no access from grade. We ran a camera through this line. The inlet to the cesspool appears to be approximately 6 -feet below grade. The cabin is served potable water by a private well located approximately 67' northwest of the cabin. The proposed septic tank will be greater than 50 -feet from the well and the proposed soil treatment area (STA) will be greater than 100 -feet from the well. Canyon Creek runs to the east of the cabin. All OWTS components will be at least 50 -feet from Canyon Creek. All OWTS components will be located at least 50 -feet from any water way. The proposed STA will be in a clearing between mature trees, to the south of the cabin. The proposed STA slopes at approximately 5% to the south and east. We have proposed breaking out the STA into separate beds, so they can be stepped down and minimize the variable cover from the front of the bed to the back of the bed. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated on January 16, 2019 by digging two soil profile test pit excavations (Test Pits). A visual and tactile soil analysis was completed by Carla Ostberg at the time of excavation.' The materials encountered in the Test Pit #1 consisted of dark brown sandy loam topsoil to 4.0 -feet, underlain by medium brown sandy loam to a maximum depth explored of 8.0 -feet. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered. We encountered a pipe and gravel STA at approximately 3 -feet, 10 - inches below grade. The STA was dry with no contaminated material in the area of the Test Pit. It is ' Carla Ostberg holds a Certificate of Attendance and Examination from the CPOW Visual and Tactile Evaluation of Soils Training. Page 2 believed that this STA served a cabin that has since been removed from the property. The materials encountered in Test Pit #2 were consistent with those encountered in Test Pit #1. Test Pit #2 was excavated to a maximum depth explored of 8.0 -feet. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered. A piezometer was placed in Test Pit #2 to monitor for groundwater in the spring. A tactile analysis of the soils was taken from Test Pit #1 at 2 -feet below grade. Soil structure grade was moderate. The soil formed a ball and a ribbon less than 1 -inch in length before breaking. Soil structure shape was granular and consistence was loose to friable. Soil texture was more gritty than smooth. The sample taken below 4 -feet had slightly more rock content, but less than 35% volume. Soil structure grade was moderate. The soil formed a ball and a ribbon less than 1 -inch in length before breaking. Soil structure shape was single -grain and consistence was loose to friable. Soil texture was more gritty than smooth. STA sizing is based on Soil Type 2, Sandy Loam with moderate structure grade. A long term acceptance rate (LTAR) of 0.6 gallons per square foot will be used to design the STA, in accordance with Table 10-1 presented in the Garfield County On -Site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations. Drywell north of residence beginning of Test Pit #1 Existing pipe and gravel encountered 3'10" below grade Approx.. 4' below grade some rock below 4 -feet Page 3 Backfill from Test Pit #1 Sieved sample of topsoil soils below 4 -feet in backfill pile Page 4 Test Pit #2 Backfill from Test Pit #2 Depth of Test Pit #2 Page 5 DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The existing OWTSs serving the cabins must be properly abandoned. The existing cinder block cesspool serving the 4 -bedroom cabin just be filled with onsite materials. Design Calculation 4 -bedroom Cabin = 75 GPD x 2 people/bedroom x 3 Bedrooms + 75 GPD = 525 GPD LTAR = 0.6 GPD/SF 525 GPD / 0.6 GPD/SF x 1.2 (gravity bed) x 0.7 (chambers) = 735 SF The new OWTS design is based on 4 -bedrooms. An average daily wastewater flow of 525 GPD will be used. For the purposes of this OWTS design, Benchmark Elevation at the 4-bedrom cabin has been established as 100' at the elevation of the existing sewer line exiting the residence, which is 3 -feet below grade. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified of any discrepancies or problems with grade elevations of proposed components during installation of the OWTS. OWTS Component Minimum Elevation Primary Tank Inlet Invert (4 -bedroom cabin) 99' (keep tank close to foundation of cabin) Distribution box Min. 98' Infiltrative Surface Min. 97.5' The 4 -inch diameter Schedule -40 sewer line exiting the residence must have a double -sweep clean out and a minimum 2% grade to the septic tank. We recommend Schedule -40 under the driveway. The system installation must include a 1250 -gallon, two-compartment concrete Valley Precast septic tank with a traffic rated lid and an Orenco@ Biotube Effluent Filter on the outlet tee. Risers must bring the manhole lids to grade for access. If more than one riser is added to the septic tank, an extension handle must be installed on the effluent filter. We also recommend cast iron manhole lids as the area is subject to traffic. Effluent will gravity flow to a distribution box, and then to two gravelless chamber beds. The distribution box must be accessible from grade and must have flow equalizers, or similar product, installed on each outlet pipe in the distribution box to assure equal flow to each bed. Each bed will consist of a level manifold and four rows of 8 'Quick 4' Standard Plus Infiltrator@ chambers for a total of 64 chambers and 768 square feet of infiltrative area. Inspection ports must be installed in all four corners of the bed. Ports may be cut to grade and placed in sprinkler boxes for access. The infiltrative area must be at least 2 -feet below grade and must not exceed 4 -feet below grade. There must be at least 6 -feet of undisturbed soil between each bed. Fill over chambers must be 3 -inch minus and be able to support vegetative growth. The beds should be placed in the existing clearing in order to maintain the mature trees along the perimeter of the clearing. The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area. Alternatives may be considered or recommended by contacting our office. Construction must be according to Garfield County On -Site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations, the OWTS Permit provided by Garfield County Building Department, and this design. REVEGETATION REQUIREMENTS An adequate layer of good quality topsoil capable of supporting revegetation shall be placed over the entire disturbed area of the OWTS installation. A mixture of native grass seed that has good soil stabilizing characteristics (but without taproots), provides a maximum transpiration rate, and competes well with Page 6 successional species. No trees or shrubs, or any vegetation requiring regular irritation shall be placed over the STA. Until vegetation is reestablished, erosion and sediment control measures shall be implemented and maintained on site. The owner of the OWTS shall be responsible for maintaining proper vegetation cover. OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The property owner shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of each OWTS servicing the property. The property owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units, alternating STAs, and any other components needing maintenance. Geo -fabrics or plastics should not be used over the STA. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials should be placed on backfilled STAs. Livestock should not graze on the STA. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a STA. If an effluent filter or screen has been installed in the OWTS, we recommend this filter or screen be cleaned annually, or as needed. If the OWTS consists of a pressurized pump system, we recommend the laterals be flushed annually, or as needed. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, weep holes must be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. The pump shall have an audible and visual alarm notification in the event of excessively high water conditions and shall be connected to a control breaker separate from the high water alarm breaker and from any other control system circuits. The pump system shall have a switch so the pump can be manually operated. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of the STA due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Backfill over the STA must be uniform and granular with no material greater than minus 3 -inch. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of OWTS components. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation. LIMITS: The design is based on information submitted. If soil conditions encountered are different from conditions described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow applicable county regulations. The contractor should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Licensing of Systems Contractors may be required by county regulation. Please call with questions.
