(Engineer's job reference Number 8136.) Dear Mr. MacLaughlin: During a telephone conversation on December 13, 2019, you informed me of several details that needed to be addressed at the home referenced above. The following is a list of changes with their respective comments: 1. The 10 -foot door opening at the rear of the living room was changed to a 12 -foot, 5 -inch opening. Based on the analysis of the header for this opening the specified header will preform within code allowed minimums. 2. There were several trimmer studs that were interrupted and did not extend from bottom plate to bottom of the header. These trimmer studs were the second trimmer studs. The first trimmer studs did extend from plate to header. The allowable load for the trimmers is determined by the grain orientation. The value for end grain bearing is much higher than that for side grain bearing. It is best to use end grain bearing wherever possible. Since these trimmer studs are bearing on the side grain of the headers and bottom plates, they were designed with the lower side grain bearing values. Therefore, the trimmers should be adequate. All spaces between members should be shimmed solid with steel shims to prevent any settling, which could cause cracking in the fmishes. 3. One of the king studs at the wood supporting post of the front porch beams was notched approximately 1 -inch to allow for the full width of the beam. This notch should not affect the integrity of the support. However, one of the photos you sent showed a wood shim between the beam and a trimmer stud. This shim should be replaced with a stack of steel shims. 4. The crawl space access was moved from the entry closet to the master bedroom closet. A new drawing with the relocated crawl space access is included as part of this letter. The hangers and all members shall be the same as specified with the access in the original location. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely yours, Robert L. Malouff, P.E.
