(OWTS) design re'commendations for the subject property. the 2.17-acre property is located outside of
Carbondale, in an area where OWTSs and wells are necessarV. â,111

The residence will be served potable water from a well. The well must be at least 5O-feet from the
proposed septic tank and at least 1O0-feet from the proposed soil treatment area (STA). No water line
should come within 25-feet of any OWTS component.
The proposed STA location is west of the existing and proposed driveway. The area is covered with
native grasses and sage.
There should be no traffic or staging of material over the future STA site to avoid compaction of soils prior to
construction of the STA.
You will be providing design documents, including the site plan and details, for the proposed OWTS
based on our recommendations.

SUBSURFACE
The subsurface was investigated on March 30,2021 by digging two soil profile test pit excavations (Test
Pits). A visual and tactile soil analysis was completed by Carla Ostberg at the time of excavation.l
The materials encountered in the Test Pit #1 consisted of medium brown topsoil to 18-inches, underlain by
tan to whitish calcareous clay matrix with some rock to a maximum depth explored of 6-feet. No bedrock
or groundwater was encountered. This test pit was located near the proposed house foundation.
The materials encountered in the Test Pit #2 consisted of medium brown topsoil to 2.0-feet, underlain by
tan to whitish calcareous clay matrix to a maximum depth explored of 6.5-feet. No bedrock or
groundwater was encountered. Test Pit #2 was located to the northwest of the proposed STA. Less rock
was encountered in Test Pit #2. Digging beyond 6.5-feet was difficult.
A sample of the soils was taken from Test Pit #2 at approximately 3Jeet below grade. Soil structure
grade was moderate. The soil formed a ball and a ribbon less than 1-inch in length before breaking. Soil
structure shape was blocky and consistence was friable to firm. Soil texture was both gritty and smooth.
Soils are consistent with Soil Type 2. A long term acceptance rate (LTAR) of 0.6 gallons per square
foot will be used to design the OWTS.

DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
Desiqn Calculations:
Average Design Flow = 75 GPD x 2 people/bedroom x 3 Bedrooms = 450 GPD
LTAR = 0.6 GPD/SF
450 GPD / 0.6 GPD/SF x 1.2 (gravity bed) x 0.7 (chambers) = 639 tt
The OWTS design is based on 3-bedrooms. An average daily wastewater flow of 450 GPD will be used
We recommend a 4-inch diameter, SDR-35 sewer line with minimum 2o/o grade to the septic tank.
We recommend the system installation include a 1000-gallon, two-compartment poly septic tank with an
effluent filter on the outlet tee. Risers must bring the manhole lids to grade for access. lf more than one
riser is added to the septic tank, an extension handle must be installed on the effluent filter.
We recommend effluent gravity flow to three rows of 14 'ARC'ADS chambers in a bed configuration
connected with a 4-inch diameter SDR-35 level manifold for a total of 42 chambers and 630 square feet
of infiltrative area. Chambers must be installed with at least 1-foot but no more than 3-feet of cover over
the chambers. We recommend backfill with material able to support vegetative growth. lnspection ports
must be installed at each corner of the bed. Ports may be cut to grade and placed in sprinkler boxes for
access.
The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area
Alternatives may be considered or recommended by contacting our office. Construction must be
according to Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations, the OWTS Permit
provided by Garfleld County Building Department, and this design.
