Site lnvestigation
On August 9,2022 Brynn Boyd of Radian Engineering, performed a field investigation at Lot 27, CounTy
Road 237, Garfield County, Colorado. A three bedroom home will be constructed on the site. Three test
pits were dug in the area of the proposed soil treatment area (STA). During the site visit, the test pits
were logged, as shown in Appendix A. The STA design can also be found in Appendix A.
The test pits were dug near the same elevation of the proposed STA, east of the proposed home. The
test pits were 20 and 40 feet apart from each other. All test pits were dug to bedrock with a 35D John
Deere mini excavator. No groundwater was encountered, however bedrock inhibited further excavation
at three feet. The bedrock started at about 2.5,4.5 and 5.5 feet deep and was extremely weathered.
After 8 inches of topsoil, the test pits consisted mostly of structureless brown/gray clay loam, with a few
rocks up to 12" scattered throughout. Soils in the test pits were consistent with a clay loam texture,
giving L-2" ribbons and feeling neither gritty nor smooth, According to the USDA NRCS Guide to Texture
by Feel, this gives a clay loam soiltype. Soils did not have more than 35% rock. There were no
distinguishing layers in the test pits. There was no soil structure or grade for the soils. Given these
constraints and looking at the USDA NRCS Guide to Texture by Feel chart, a soil type of 3A has been
selected for the site soils.
The location of the test pits, home site, driveway and property lines are located on the drawings
attached.
Setbacks from the STA (soil treatment area) bed to features on site will be as follows. These setbacks
follow the setbacks listed on the Garfield County Onsite Wastewater Regulations. More setbacks than
these listed can be found in the table within the regulations.
Well: >200 feet
Dwelling: >20 feet
Property Line: >10 feet
Dry Gulch: >25 feet
There are wells on this property. The well is shared between the subject property and the property to
the northeast. All other neighboring wells are outside of the 200 foot setback requirement. The STA is
designed for a 200 foot setback from all wells. No development of additional impervious surfaces or
changes in drainage patterns is anticipated, other than the driveway and new home construction. A
drainage swale has been identified in the design to divert water away from the disposal field.
Design
Following the Garfield County Septic Regulations Guidelines, the following calculations were
determined:
A Three bedroom house gives 450 Gallons per Day of effluent. Soils in the test pit indicated a clay loam,
giving a LTAR of 0.3 when using the TL1 method. An LTAR of 0,3 will be used for calculations.
Taking 450 gpd / O.3O = 1500 sq feet of disposal area. A size reduction of 30% is allowed for the use of
infiltrator chambers, according to Garfield County Onsite Wastewater Regulations. The STA will be a
gravity fed seepage bed. Therefore an STA area of (1500sf xO.7 = 1050 sf) 1050 sq feet is required. Using
3 foot wide quíck 4 plus infiltrators, an STA with 4 trench rows of infiltrators and a minimum of 88 feet
long will be required. lnfiltrators are 4 feet long, therefore there will be 22 infiltrators per row and a
length of 88 feet per row. With four rows, this gives a total of 88 infiltrators required for the project. The
final dimension of the rows will be 88 feet long plus endcaps, giving an overall dimension of 92 feet.
Soil type 3A requires a 4' soil section according to Table 7-2 of Garfield County Onsite Wastewater
Regulations. The system will qualify as a TLL system, due to the gravity fed system. The test pits show
bedrock 2.5,4.5 and 5.5 feet below ground. The system will be located close to test pits 2 and 3 where
the soil profile was deeper. This will be field checked.
Closeout of proiect
After final inspection of the septic system and STA, owners are provided with a brochure on how to
properly take care of their new septic system. This brochure is produced by Pipeline and is entitled
Mointoining Your Septic System - A Guide for Homeowners.
