The spacing ancl quantit)' of the hoies exceecls the prescriptive lim.itations for hole size/ spacingTq,rnãCty. A, previousJy mentioned, those prescliptive limitations are proviclecl by the manufacturer for â reason; exceecling them can clramarically reduce the capacity and perforrrance of the I-joist. While â cover plate was addecl over the "middle" hole that wâs no longer being usecl, rve did not attribute an)¡ câp^city to these plates, âs there are specifìc naiüng/glueing requirements in orcier ro re- estabüsh capacity. However, for these specific I-joists, we conducted a more thorough analysis based on a long rectangular opening (akin to what we'd see for ciuctworþ rhar encompasses the three holes. Based on tlìe relatively shott span, ancl the capacity of the unaiterecl joist, these driilings are acceptable, Best, Joe Miller, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng. The spacing ancl quantity of the holes exceeds the prescriptive limitations for hole size/spacing/quantity. Those prescriptive limitations are provicled by the manufactlrrer for a reason; exceecLing them can dramatically recluce the capacity and performance of the I-joist. For these specifìc I-joists, we conducted a more thorough analysis based on this specifìc loading condition with these specific holes using engineering mechanics. The conttolling capacity recluction was based on the shear capacity near the end, which was based on two holes close together (which functionecl âs one large hole, see photo below). However, based on the relatively short span, ancl the capacity of the unaltere d joist, these clrillings in the u216 /21,7 joists are acceptable. If these drillings continr-re tnto FJ2|B joists in a similar fashion, temediation or replacement will be required. lìest, Joe Millet, Ph.D., P.8,., P.Eng.
