STRUCTURAL CONSULTANTS 5012 County Road 154 Phone & Fax (970) 945 6305 Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 MEMORANDUM To: Garfield County Date: March 07, 2023 Attn: Building and Planning Department Re: Rivas Residence: Lot No. 2, Gobblers Knob, Donegan Road, Garfield Count, CO. Our office is the structural design engineer of record for the noted project. As such, we issued construction documents dated Aug. 12, 2022. I performed a site inspection on Feb. 16, 2023. The main floor framing includes a series of 10" deep structural steel beams (i. e. W 10's). At that time I noted that one of the W 10 steel beams was undersized: a W10 x 22 was installed rather than the specified W10 x 39. The beam in question spans approximately 22 feet east to west and supports the master bedroom floor (it is located beneath the north wall of the master bedroom). The installed W 10 x 22 has adequate strength but does not have adequate stiffness. Consequently, potential excessive beam deflection and the resultant potential distress to the supported floor and wall were concerning. Our office provided a partial plan and reinforcement detail to correct the situation. I have attached that information to this memo. The W10 x 22 clear span is approximately 21'-5" and the beam reinforcement has been installed continuously for a length of approximately 18'-9". Due to HVAV ductwork it was not possible to install the reinforcement at each end of the beam the reinforcement. The beam reinforcement as installed is structurally adequate.
