Project No. 21-7-490
Subject: Observation of Completed Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot E3, Aspen Glen,
505 East Diamond A Ranch Road, Garfield County, Colorado
Gentlemen:
As requested, a representative of Kumar & Associates, Inc. observed the remaining southeastern
part of the excavation at the subject site on December 7, 2021 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation
design are presented in this report. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of
foundations and observed the partial excavation at the site and presented our findings in
respective reports dated July 22, 2021, and December 1, 2021, Project No. 21-7-490.
The proposed residence will be above crawlspace in the living area with an attached slab-on-
grade garage. Spread footings placed on the dense gravel soil were recommended for the
foundation support.
At the time of our visit to the site on December 1, 2021, the foundation excavation had been cut
in one level from about one to three feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in
the bottom of the excavation consisted of relatively dense, silty sandy gravel and cobbles in the
northwestern part of the excavation (highlighted in yellow on attached plan) and sandy clay in
the southeastern part of the excavation. It was recommended to Matt Korus with Peak 3
Construction that the clay soils in the southeastern part of the excavation be removed and the
foundation bearing level be extended down to the natural granular soils. At the time of our visit
to the site on December 7, 2021, the remaining southeastern part of the excavation had been
deepened to expose relatively dense, silty sandy gravel and cobbles, up to about 3 to 4 feet below
the adjacent ground surface. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were
slightly moist.
The gravel soils exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered on
the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the recommended allowable
bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. Loose disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas to
expose the undisturbed natural granular soils. The bearing soils should be protected from frost
