The proposed 3-BR OWTS will be served by a new 1,000-gallon septic tank (minimum) and three (3) trenches each with fifteen (15) Q4 Standard Plus units for a minimum l7' x 63' footprint (Figure A2). The trenches will use a total of 45 Standard Plus Quick4 Infiltrator@ units generally oriented east to west in a soil treatment area (STA)/leachfield sloping approximately 5Yo to the north and 4-5% west. ADS Arc 36 chambers may also be used for the leachfield; the three (3) trenches require twelve (12) BioDiffi.rser Arc 36 chamber units in each trench for a total of 36 chamber units. Soils and percolation data were collected by V/estWater Engineering August 7 ,2023 in accordance with Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment System (OV/TS) Regulations (Regulations). Soil profile in the vicinity of proposed STA shows silty sandy loam with some sub-angular clasts in the 3.0- to 7.5-foot interval. The high seasonal water table is estimated to be greater than 8.0 feet below ground surface (bgs). Percolation rates for the 5 percolation test holes completed in the silty sand loam range from 4 to 44 minutes per inch (mir/in) with a 20 minlin average. Site soils are classified as Soil Type 2 in accordance with Table 10-1 of the Regulations based on silty sand loam texture and percolation rates predominantly within the 16-25 mirVin range. The long-term acceptance rate (LTAR) used to design the OWTS (Table l0-1 Regulations) is 0.60 gallons per day per square foot area (gpd/ft2). 2.0 WASTE\ilATER FLO\üS Maximum Daily Wastewater Flow (gpd): 3-BR Dwelling 3 bedrooms x 150 gpd/bedroom :450 g¡rd Septic Tank The minimum required septic tank capacity for a 3-BR dwelling is 1,000 gallons (Table 9-l Regulations). For this design, use a two-compartment septic tank for said volume approved for use in Garfield County. The proposed new I,O00-gallon septic tank will provide at least 48 hours of detention time for influent wastewater flow from the proposed 3-BR single-family residence. The 48 hour (2-day) particle detention time volume requirement is 900 gallons (450 gpd x 2-days : 900 gallons). The internal septic tank inlet and outlet tees must be installed per Regulations. 3.0 O\ilTS DESIGN Silty sand loam occurring at the 1.0 to 3.0 feet depth interval will be used for the upper infiltrative surface for the proposed STA (Figure A3). The shallow leachfield with 3.0 feet depth will keep infiltrative surface above the silty sand supporting sub-angular clasts up to small boulder in size. Shallow STAs promote secondary effluent treatment due to available soil oxygen optimizing bacteria and fungi processes. Trench excavation will remove approximately Page I 3.0 feet of soil and upper root mass to prepare a level surface for installing the infiltrators in the three (3) trenches. Soil should not be wet at the time of excavation. Place a minimum l-foot of final cover (1O-inches per Regulations) using the silty sand loam (minimize rock content greater than large gravel - 2-inch or larger). Final grade shall be slightly crowned over proposed trenches so water runs off and will not pond over any area of STA/leachfield. Prior to backfilling, cover the Q4 infiltrator trenches with non-woven geotextile fabric or similar permeable material to prohibit soil intrusion into the chamber louver vents. All setback distances in accordance with the Regulations are applicable to septic system installation. The septic tank must be at least 5 feet, and STA at least 20 feet from plumbed modular structure(s) with a basement, crawl space, and or footing drains. STA's must be outside of any easements and at least 10 feet from property lines. Setback distances also apply to natural and artificial waterways, including a 50-foot setback from STA/leachfield to open irrigation ditches and natural water bodies. Potable water lines exiting the proposed water supply cistern serving the residence must be 25 feet from the STA/leachfield. The existing cistern and water well must be at least 100 feet from the proposed leachfield per State Water Well Construction Rules unless a variance is granted for the 25-foot minimum setback distance. Designated leachfield repair area must be retained per Regulations as idle land set aside for future use once primary fields fail and no longer accepts wastewater. The new 1,O00-gallon septic tank will provide at least 48 hours of detention time for influent wastewater flow from the proposed dwelling. Internal septic tank inlet and outlet tees must be installed per Regulations. An effluent filter must be installed instead of tee on the septic tank outlet. Use the Orenco Systems Biotube Effluent Filter OSI Model FTW0444-36 or equivalent. Effluent filters typically require cleaning and maintenance evory 6 months. The following design calculations propose to discharge septic tank effluent to three (3) Quick a Plus trenches each using fifteen (15) Q4 units for a total minimum disturbed area of approximately 17 feet by 63 feet with end caps. A total of 45 Quick 4 Standard Plus Infiltrator units will be installed in the 3-Trench System generally oriented east-west using a distribution box for equal effluent distribution to the STAs/leachfield. A total of 36 BioDiffuser Arc 36 chamber units can be used instead of Infiltrators using twelve (12) chamber units in each of the three (3) trenches. Use the top porl of the Infiltrator or ADS faceplate for all influent piping. 4.0 SYSTEMINSTALLATIONREQUIREMENTS Minimum setback requirements must be in accordance with the Regulations. All sewer pipe couplings must be completed with primed and glued or bell and spigot joints using 4-inch SDR 35 PVC pipe. Schedule 40 PVC 4-inch pipe with a minimum l-foot soil cover must be used if pipe is installed in a vehicular traffic crossing. Drain-waste-vent (DV/V) rated Schedule 40 PVC pipe is called out for crossings but may also be used instead of SDR 35 PVC pipe. Building sewer pipe must be installed at a slope between l/s-inch andl/¿-inch per foot slope (l to 2o/r), preferably using the Yq-inch per foot slope as recommended by the International Plumbing Code (IPC) as administered by the County. Fittings shall be sweep 90-degree curves or two (2) 45-degree elbows at all influent pipe turns. Fittings must be DWV for schedule 40 PVC pipe. Clean-outs (2-way) are required between dwelling and tank and beyond tank where pipe lengths exceed 100 feet from tank to STA/leachfield and at all pipe bends greater than 45 degrees. The installer must adhere to minimum depth requirements for leachfield and ensure gravity drainage into all septic system components to avoid using a lift pump. System components must be placed on native soils or re-stabilized soils in excavated areas. Page 3 Infiltrator trenches must be excavated level to ensure the prepared infiltrative surface is level along the entire length of STA. Solid 4-inch pipe is used in the header network of sanitary tees. The owner will ultimately be responsible for septic system maintenance including pumping the septic tank once every 3-4 years and cleaning the effluent filter every 6 months. 5.0 SYSTEM INSPECTION WestWater Engineering is responsible for inspecting OWTS to ensure construction conforms to the design plan and meets all aspects of County Regulations including: o Inspect system prior to backfilling including piping and septic system components. o Complete an as-built drawing of the system. 6.0 DESIGN LIMITATIONS The OIWTS design is based on site-specific soil conditions and percolation data collected in the vicinity of the proposed STA/leachfield and local experience of designing OWTS's in Colorado. The design is only valid for the proposed new OWTS serving the proposed single-family residence at the referenced location provided in this report. WestWater Engineering assumes no liability for inaccurate information or conditions that vary from the design assumptions listed above. SOLS LOG Site soils were investigated at the 46.0-acre mostly vacant ranch parcel to collect site-specific design criteria for an onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) to serve a proposed 3-BR single-family dwelling located at Arrowhead Trail Lot 52, Rifle, CO. Percolation testing procedures were conducted in accordance with Garfield County On-Site Wastewater Treatment System (OV/TS) Regulations (Regulations). The Percolation Test Site is located approximately 450 feet south of the north property line and220 feet west of the east property line (Figure Al). The proposed soil treatment area (STA)/leachfield is located east of the proposed 3-BR dwelling in an area sloping about 5o/o northto northwest. The excavated soils observation pit shows silty sand loam overlying chalky silty sand loam supporting sub-angular pebble to boulder sized clasts down to 7.0 feet. Groundwater was not encountered in the 7.5-foot soils observation pit. Estimated high seasonal groundwater is greater than 8.0 feet. The soils profile log is summarized below and in Table ,A'1. Very dark brown (1OYR 212) silty sand loam from 0-l .7 feet. The silty sand loam becomes white to pinkish white color (lOYR 8/1 to 7.5YR 812) from I.7 -3.0 feet due to the presence of highly disseminated calcite and gypsum evaporites indicative of the effective depth of evapotranspiration. Mottled silty sand ranging in color from 60% strong brown (7.5YR 516) to 40% pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2) supporting some sub-angular pebble- to small boulder sized clasts occurs from 3.0-7.5 feet maximum depth of excavation. Groundwater was not encountered in the 7.5-foot soils observation pit with an estimated seasonal high water table greater than 8.0 feet. The lack moisture and presence of low chroma soil coloring indicating prolonged saturation near the 7.5-foot depth interval supports the greater than 8.0 feet estimate for high seasonal groundwater. AI Table 41. Soil Log Description vf : very fîne; f : fine; m: medium and; crs : coarse for sand sized particles Percolation rates summarized in Table A2 show arange from 4 to 44 minutes per inch (min/in) with an average of 20 min/in. Based on percolation data, macroscopicltactile soil analysis and maximum depth of excavation, the bottom of leachfield (top of infiltrative surface) should be no deeper than 3.0 feet to avoid silty sand soil with sub-angular clasts. Maximum leachfield depth per the Regulations is 4.0 feet. Site soils are categorized as Type 2 soils based on silty sand loam, granular structure, and percolation rates predominantly falling within the 16-25 min/in range. Soils should not be excavated under wet conditions to avoid compaction and smearing leading to a reduction in permeability. Table 42.
