Subjecil Observation of Excavationo Proposed Shop Building, Parcel No.27273320a374'
County Road 233, Rifle, Colorado
Dear Jill & Mike:
As requested, a representative of Kumar & Associates, Inc. observed the excavation at the
subject site on Novernber 1 1, 2024 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The
nnOings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in
this report. we previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and
presented our findings in a report dated October 2l,2024,Project No. 24-7-583'
The proposed shop building will be a single-story structure with a slab-on-grade ground floor.
The building has been designed to be supported on spread footings sized for an allowable
bearing pressure of 1,200 Psf.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one level from 4 to
40 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation
consisted of silty sand. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were
slightly moist to moist.
The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered
on the site and suitable for support of spread footings placed on at least 2 feetof compacted
sfructural fill and designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 1,200 psf with a
risk of foundation settlement as discussed in the previous report. Structural fill can consist of the
onsite sand soil or an approved imported gravel material compacted to at least 98Vo of the
maximum standard Proctor density at amoisture content with in 2% of optimum' Loose
disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas to expose the undisturbed natural soils.
The bearing soils should be protected &om frost and concrete should not be placed on frozen
soils. Other recommendations presented in ow previous report which are applicable should also
be obseryed. We should observe the placement of the structural filI and test for compaction.
within the foundation exoavation and the previous subsurface exploration at the site.Variations
in the subsr.rface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation
movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions
