RE: Thunder River Market Kitchen MAU – 6800 Hwy 82, Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601
Zach,
As requested, we visited the above site on March 4, 2025 to observe the existing roof conditions in regard to placing a new
mechanical air-handling unit (MAU) over the kitchen area of the Thunder River Market. Generally, the roof structure was noted to be
pre-engineered trusses spanning north south and supported on an interior girder line that appears to be a 21” deep glulam beam.
We understand the new MAU will be 967 lbs.
Based on typical design requirements for buildings in this area, we assume that the roof structure was originally designed for 40 psf
snow load and we estimate the roof assembly dead load is approximately 20 psf. A cursory analysis of the assumed glulam girder
supports this assumption. The new MAU is approximately 3.5% of the assumed original design load for the existing girder, which is
less than the 5% increase threshold per 2015 IEBC, therefore no structural alteration is necessary. We recommend the unit be
placed over the central girder line, near the party wall behind the kitchen, and that it be set on full perimeter curb supports
that span across three trusses minimum on each side of the girder line. This location will cause a 4.5% increase in shear
stresses and a 1.5% increase in flexural stresses in the girder, each less than the above noted 5% threshold. We also recommend
verifying that the existing roof structure in the vicinity of the new unit is in good condition and does not have any existing
damage, such as moisture damage, that may compromise the intended structural capacity. If variations from any above noted
assumptions are discovered during the work, please notify our office so that we may re-evaluate our recommendations.
Please feel free to contact our office should questions arise; we look forward to working with you as needed for the completion of the
project.
Sincerely,
MTCG Structural
