Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Design (Septic Tank Replacement)
3-Bedroom Residence + 2-Bedroom Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)
310 Flying Fish Road
Garfield County, Colorado
Projoct No. C1942
Drew,
CBO lnc. completed a septlc tank replacement design for the subject residence. The 2,O-acre properly is
located outside of Carbondale, in an area where OWTSs and wells are necessary,
Legal Description: Section: 32 Township: 7 Range: 87 A TR lN LOT 19 2 ACRES
Parcel lD: 2391 -322-04-032
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is currently developed with a 3-bedroom residence and Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU).
The residences are served by an existing OWTS. The permit (enclosed) was provided by Garfield
County Community Development Department. The subject OWTS consists of one 1O00-gallon, two-
compartment concrete septic tank followed by a soiltreatment area (STA) comprised of a 50' x 50' lined
Evaporation Transpiration (ET) bed. lndividualSewage DisposalSystem (ISDS) Permit 1383 documents
the system, The system was slzed to accommodate 3 bedrooms. The permit received finalapproval
on December 14, 1984.
An upgrade to the entire OWTS is anticipated; however, the existing septic tank has been reported to be
in poor condition and there is a desire to replace the septic tank near term, Replacement of the STA will
follow, pending completion of design documents.
The residences are served by a private well located in the west central portion of the property.
The existing STA will remain temporarily until new design documents have been completed and
construclion can be coordinated.
DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
The existing septic tank will be abandoned by pumping the tank and removing it or crushing the top,
bottom, and sides and filling in the voidswith onsite materials, We recommend removalof the septic
tank due to the presence of high seasonal groundwater on the property.
The OWTS design is based on 3-bedrooms in the residence and 2-bedrooms ADU. An average daily
wastewater flow of 750 GPD will be used.
Page2
For the purposes of this OWTS design, Benchmark Elevation has been established as 100' as the
existing Bewer lines on the north side of the residence. An additional sewer line exits the residence near
the entry. A sewer line also exits the south side of the ADU. Elevations of the existing septic tank
inlet and outlet should be match for propertie into the existing sewer llnes and STA. CBO lnc.
should be notified of any discrepancies or problems with grade elevations of proposed components
during installation of the OWTS.
*Elevations are based upon practices. Component elevations may change
installation due to site conditions. Minimum grade refes to piping between components.
The sewer lines exiting the residence and ADU must be 4-inch diameter SDR-35 sewer lines with double-
sweep clean outs and a minimum2o/o grade to the septic tank.
A new 150O-gallon, two-compartment lnfiltrator@ poly septic tank with an Orenco@ Biotube effluent filter
on the outlet tee must be installed. Risers must bring the manhole lids to grade for access. lf more than
one riser is added to the septic tank, an extension handle must be installed on the effluent filter.
The subsurface was explored and groundwater was encountered at approximately 3-feet below grade
with mottling present at approimately 2-feet below grade. We are estimating high seasonal groundwater
at 2-feet below grade. We have included specifications for buoyancy control of the septic tank, if deemed
necessary.
Effluent will gravity flow to the existing STA. Plans to replace the STA are pending,
COMPONENT SPECIFICATIONS
The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area,
CBO Inc. must approve altematlve components prior to installation of the OWT$. Requests must
be submitted, ln writing, to our offlce for approval prior to installation. Component technical data
sheets are available upon request.
Construc{ion must be according to the jurisdiction's adopted On-Site Wastewater Treatment System
Regulations, the OWTS Permit, and this design.

PERMIT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
An OWTS Permit Application (TANK ONLY) must be submitted to Garfield County Environmental
Health Department, https:/ftvwrv.qarfield-countv.com/r;nvironmenlal-health/fi.lesqcco/sites/16/OWT{r!
Applicatipn-Complete-Packet-Dtec.-2019.pdf. We encourage communication with Garfield County
Environmental Health to determine proper permitting protocol to implement the near-term STA
replacement.
All questions regarding permit submission can be directed to Garfield County EnvironmentalHealth
Department, 970-945-66 1 4 xB 1 50.
INSTALIATION CONTRACTOR
CBO lnc. expects that the installer be experienced and qualilied to perform the scope of work outlined in this
design. The installer must review this design thoroughly and coordinate with our ofiice in advance of
installation, Any additional conditions in this design or county permit must be completed and documented
priorto final approval of the OWTS installation. Communication between the installer and this ofiice is
expected th roughout the installation,
I NSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS
CBO lnc. must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be performed before
backfill, afier placement of OWTS components. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, _dosing
siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. CBO lnc. should be notified 48 hours
in advance to observe the installation.
ln an effort to improve the accuracy of the record drawing, we rcquest that the installer provide a
sketch of the installation, including path of the sewer line8, water line installation (if applicable),
septic tank locatlon, STA location, and measur€ments from buildlng comens oranotherfixed
objects on the property. This sketch is most easily provided on Sheet \42.0 of the OWTS Design
pa-ct<et. Photogiaphs of the installation and final cover are also requested to supplement our installation
documentation.
RB/EGETATION REQUIREMENTS
An adequate layer of good quality topsoil capable of supporting revegetation shall be placed over the entire
disturbed area of the OWTS installation. A mixture of natiw grass seed that has good soil stabilizing
characteristics (but without taproots), provides a rnaximum transpiration rate, and competes well with
succesgional species. No trees or shrubs, or any vegetation requiring regular inigation shall be placed over
the STA. Until vegetation is reestablished, erosion and sediment control measures shall be implemented
and maintained on site. The owner of the OWTS shall be responsible for maintaining proper vegetation
cover.
OPERATION I}IFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE
The property owner shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of eaoh OWTS seMcing the
property. The property owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units,
alternating STAs, and any other components needing maintenance.
Geo-fabrics or plastics should not be used over the STA, No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials
should be placed on the backfilled STA. Machines with tracks (not wheels) should be used during
construction of the STA br better weight distribution. Livestock should not graze on the STA. Plumbing
fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additionalwater is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a
running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a STA.
Page 4
lf an efiluent filter or screen has been installed in the OWTS, we recommend this filter or screen be cleaned
annually, or as needed. lf the OWTS consists of a pressurized pump system, wo recommend the laterals be
flushed annually, or as needed.
The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of
solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non-biodegradable materials should not
be placed into the OWIS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener
should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the O\AffS.
Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered br domeslic waste
only.
ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES
lf design includes a pump, weep holes must be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of
freezing. The pump shall have an audible and visual alarm notification in the event of excessively high-
water conditions and shall be connected to a control breaker separate from the high-water alarm breaker
and from any other control system circuits. The pump system shall have a switch so the pump can be
manually operated.
Excavation equipment must not drive in the excavation of the STA due to the potentialto compact soil,
Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade.
Backfill over the STA must be uniform and granularwith no material greater than minus 3-inch.
LIMITS:
The design is based on information submitted. lf soil conditions encountered are different from conditions
described in report, CBO lnc. should be notified. AIIOWTS construction must be according to the county
regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow applicable county regulations. The
contractor should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of
the county in which they are working. Licensing of Systems Contractors may be required by county
regulation.
Please call with questions.
Sincerely,
CBO lnc.

2. Us€ the appropriate row in St€p 2, Table 2 to dotermine the minimum
buoyancy control m€thods for th€ sit6 condltions,
3, Once the prelerred buoyancy control method is s€l6cted, follow the
impl€mentation procedures provided in Step 3,
Step 1 - Determine Need for Buoyancy Control
Required information: (1) maxlmum height ol uninterrupt€d saturat€d soil
above the tank bottom; and (2) th6 depth of soil cover above the tank top.
Tank buoyancy control may be required if:
. the level of unint€rrupted saturated soil outside the tank has the
potential to ris€ 30 inches (750 mm) or more abov6 the bottom of the
tank; and
. less than 12 inches (300 mm) of soil cover is to be placed as backfill

Supplemental Downward Force
The minimum suppl€m€ntal downward foroe required is included in Table 2 to allow custom buoyancy control methods. These values includ€ a factor of
safely of 1,5 appli€d to the calculated downward lorce requlred to restrain th€ tank, Custom-designed buoyancy control m€thods shall conservatlv€ly
consid€r saturated soil condltions trom the bottom-of-tank el€vation to grouncl surfac€. As long as buoyancy control is provid€d that supplies the minimum
downward force list€d in the table (for poured-concr€te blocks or other methods d€signed by third parties), the tanks ar€ calculatod to be stable for the
uninterruplod saturated soil level outside the tank and above the tank bottom and corresponding soil cover conditions. All lnfiltrator strapping and faetening
recommendations apply for custom-dosigned buoyancy control methods. Contact lnfiltrator's Technical Services Dopartment with any questions regarding
supplem6ntal downward force requlrements,
Step 3 - lmplementation
Efiective buoyancy control ol lnfiltrator tanks requires oarelul preparation,
thorough excavation, pr€cis€ placement, s€cur€ strapping and proper
backfilling, as described and illustrat€d below.
Flguro 3: Plan Vlow

I
Excavation Requirements
It is recommend€d that th€ excavation width provide a minimum of 36
inches (900 mm) clearance beyond iho tank on all sides when utillzing
buoyancy control, This will allow sutficient space within the excavation to
place anchoring equipment and lasten strapping, The excavation should
provide a minimum 48-inch (1,200 mm) clearance boyond the tank when
using ChancerM No-Wrench Screw Anchors to allow for room to properly
install th€ scr€w anchors, Tha aclual excavation size shall be determined
by the installer. Refer to lnfiltrator lM-Series Tank lnstallation lnstructions
for additional excavation procedures.
Concrets-lilled Half Pipe Gonstruction
Concrete-filled half pipe shall be supported with soil or otlrer stabilizing
means b€low the pipe haunches prior to concrete placemBnt. Th€
stabilization shall prevent the pipe trom rolling during placement and curing
of the concreto, Concrete shall be allowed to cure for a minimum of one
day prior to tank backlilling.
Placement of Deadmen and Anchors
Concrete deadman anchors ar6 to b6 install€d at th€ bottom of lhe tank
oxcavalion, parallel to the long axis of the tank (se€ Flgure 3),
6'MIN EXTENSION 6" MIN EXTENSION
The deadmen should be placed close to, but not touching, th€ tank on
both sides of the tank to allow the placement of backlill between lhe

resistant or coated with epoxy or other corrosion-reslstant materials to
inhibit deterioration in the subsurlace environment. Consider encapsulating
such compon€nts in heat-shrink tubing or applying a conosion-resistant
coating prior to burial,
CONCRETE COLLAR
Strapping
Proper installation ot straps over th6 tank is critical tor tank stability und€r
changing conditions both inside and outside the tank. Straps must be
placed at the specified strapping locations for each model, as illustrated
in Figure 5, Strapping locations are embossed on the exterior surlace
of th€ rank with the tollowing text: "SHIPPING/ANTI-BUOYANOY STRAP
HEBE." The lM-Series tank strapping locations corr€spond to structurally
reinforcod ar€as of the tank body. Straps must never be placed over
access op€nings, lids, or inlet/outl€t piping. (Straps must be tight€n€d with
a ratch€t or turnbuckle system to r€move slack and slightly pre-load the
system),
Sirapplng l{otes:
1. The buoyancy control shall be centered across the straps (excludes helical
anchors). The control shall extend a mlnlmum of 6 inches (150 mm) beyond the
