We observed crews placing material in approximately 8-10" lifts with a dozer for the Chapparal Drive street subgrade. No compactive effort was observed at this location during our visit. Compactive effort was being applied to the west footing line of Building A with a Bomag single smooth drum roller. Our understanding was that the areas tested were placed and compacted the previous Friday. We observed lower than optimum moisture content at the locations tested. At the time of our arrival the prepared sidewalk subgrade felt soft and some deflection of the surface was noted. Density testing results indicated the subgrade did not meet project specifications. We recommended additional compactive effort be applied to the sidewalk subgrade. We returned later in the afternoon and noted that the subgrade felt firmer, and no deflection underfoot was observed. Additional density testing in the area that failed earlier in the day indicated the subgrade was properly compacted and met the project specifications. Additional testing was performed along the prepared surface.
