We observed crews placing material in approximately 8-10" lifts with a dozer for the Chapparal Drive street subgrade. No compactive effort was observed at this location during our visit. Compactive effort was being applied to the west footing line of Building A with a Bomag single smooth drum roller. Our understanding was that the areas tested were placed and compacted the previous Friday. We observed lower than optimum moisture content at the locations tested. We observed the contractor backfill the upper portion of the sanitary trench with the processed on-site soils previously excavated from the sanitary trench and apply compactive effort with a static wheel attached to a hoe and a vibratory sheeps-foot trench compactor. Results of density testing performed today met project specifications. The contractor was notified of our observations and density test results. Our office will be contacted when additional testing is requested. The subgrade was prepared prior to our arrival. Results of density testing of the sidewalk subgrade in area indicated did not meet project specifications. Multiple soft areas of the sidewalk subgrade were noted during our time on-site. We recommended that the sidewalk subgrade be scarified and allowed to air dry before recompaction. Results of density testing performed on the curb and gutter subgrade on the east side of Chaparral Circle met project specifications. The general contractor was notified of our test results and observations in these areas. Our office will be notified when sidewalk subgrade has been addressed and is ready for retesting. This report presents opinions formed as a result of our observations of fill placement and the test results shown above. Test data are not the sole basis for opinions whether the fill meets project specifications. The contractor is responsible to apply necessary compaction effort and moisture to comply with project specifications.
