Project structural drawings indicate design based on an assumed maximum allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. Encountered Conditions Excavation Condition:We observed the excavation for the proposed footings, as located in the photo below, and found dense, moist silt and clay. Based upon our experience and on the IBC presumed soil load bearing pressures in Table 1806.2, this soil type, at the elevations and time of our observations, likely meets or exceeds the presumed allowable bearing pressure used in the design. However, the presence of weaker subsurface soil layers resulting in allowable bearing pressure of less than 1,500 psf and/or expansive clay soils resulting in differential movement cannot be ruled out by surface observations only. Quantitatively verifying soil bearing capacity generally requires access to subsurface information and Standard Penetration test data. If this is desired, we recommend drilling and data collection be performed.
