Dear Sir:
As requested, we observed the foundation excavation at the subject
site on April 7, 1982 to determine the general subgrade conditions for
foundation support..
At the time of our site visit, footing trenches had been excavated
from 1 1/2 to 3 feet below the relatively level adjacent ground surface.
The soils exposed at bearing level consisted of medium stiff, porous
clays underlying fill consisting of gravelly clay and silt with scattered
cobbles. Several areas containing gravelly fill adjacent to existing
structures had not been completely excavated to footing grade at this
time. Results of consolidation tests performed on relatively undisturbed
samples of the natural clays obtained at footing grade in the trenches
indicate moderate to high settlement potential when subjected to con-
ditions of loading and wetting. The clays encountered were in a natural
moist condition. Some minor wet areas were noted in the trenches adjacent
the existing building where water was dripping from the eaves.
We understand the addition will be a single story structure with
typically light foundation loadings. The existing gravelly fill that
overlies the natural clays appears to vary in depth, consistency and
density. This fill should not be used for foundation bearing. The
excavation should be stepped down to completely expose natural subsoils.
Considering the conditions of the natural clays exposed in the excavation,
we recommend the use of spread footings placed below all fill, topsoil
and loose material and designed for a maximum bearing pressure of 1,200
psf for support of the structure. A final bearing check should be made
once the excavation is cut to natural soils. Initial settlements of the
foundation should be minor but additional differential movement can be
expectefi if the subsoils were to become wet. Minimum footing width
