Subject: Observation of N4 ovation, Proposed Residence Addition, 0434 Village
Drive, Rifle, Colorado.
Job No. 4 217 91
Pear Ms. Irwin:
As requested, Chen- Northern, Inc., observed the excavation at the subject site
on March 27, 1991 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The
findings of our work and recaivnendations for the foundation design are presented
in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for
geotechnical engineering services to you, dated March 22, 1991.
The proposed addition will be two stories of wood frame construction located on
the west side of the existing residence. The lower floor will be slab -on -grade.
We assume foundation loadings will be relatively light.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in
one level from 3 to 5 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The excavation
was at the same level as the existing footings. The natural ground surface was
not excavated in the proposed slab area. The materials exposed in the bottom
of the excavation consisted of silty sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders.
The results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of these soils (minus
5 -inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Fig. 1. No free water
was observed in the excavation; however, due to recent heavy snow, the exposed
soils were wet and soft in spots. The exposed soils appeared to became slightly
moist and more dense with depth.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the
proposed construction, we recananend the proposed addition be founded with spread
footings placed on the natural granular soils designed for an allowable soil
bearing pressure of 3000 psf. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches
for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Areas of loose or soft material
'encountered at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be
removed and the footings extended down to adequate natural bearing material or
allowed to dry and compacted. We should observe the excavation prior to concrete
placement to determine if the wet /soft soil subgrade has been corrected.
Exterior footings should be provided with adequate cover above their bearing
elevations for frost protection. continuous foundation walls should be
reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an
unsuppo length of at least 10 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining
