Traylor, M.D. Governor 1$ y 6 Executive Director September 2, 1981 Mr. Bud Milner Garfield County Building Inspector 2014 Blake Avenue Glenwood Springs CO 81601 Re: Rifle Fireside Inn II - Garfield County Dear Bud: On September 1, 1981, I inspected the wastewater treatment system for Rifle Fireside Inn II. There was no evidence of sewage on top of the leach field. The owner stated he is having approximately 4,000 gallons a week pumped from the system. Based on Bob Heisler's design information of 40 minutes /inch percolation rate and 1,620 gpd, the existing 3,360 square foot leach bed and the 540 square foot dry well should adequately handle the flow. The fact that the owner pumps 4,000 gallons per week leads me to believe the owners are using more than 1,620 gpd or the leach fields are not functioning properly. Bob Risley, the owner, and I discussed many options including standard leach trench, a dry well and a seepage pit. Based on the lack of land area, it appears the seepage pit would be the most feasible. Using 4,000 gal /week and a 7 day week, the owner needs additional capacity for approximately 600 gpd. Based on Bob Heisler's percolation rate of 40 minutes /inchtan additional 700 square feet of area is needed. This could be accomplished by constructing an approximate 20' x 20' x 5' leach pit filled with 3/4" to 1 1/2" of washed rock, a distribution system on top, back - filled with sand (see attached drawing). I recommended to Bob Risley the following: 1. Dig soil profile hole to bed rock (approximately 11'). 2. Step the profile hole so that your office could run some additional percolation tests to check the engineer's percolation rate. 3. Possibly install black plastic on the south side of the pit to insure the effluent does not daylight to the parking lot. When designing the pit the area covered by the plastic will have to be subtracted from the total area. This may make the pit larger. 4210 EAST 11TH AVENUE DENVER,COLORADO 80220 PHONE (303) 320 -8333 Mr. Bud Milner September 2, 1981 Page 2 4. We must keep the 4' separation from the bottom of the pit to bed rock. 5. All Garfield County regulations must be followed. As discussed your office will issue the permit and this office will aid in reviewing the plan if you desire. 6. There should be a 4" perforated pipe standing verticle in the pit (stand pipe) for checking the water level in the pit. 7. The existing dry well could be used as a distribution box and leach field by installing two 90 elbows at the same invert elevation. One elbow would be used to vary the flow topthe existing seepage bed and the second would be used to vary the flow to the new seepage pit. I told both the owner and Bob Risley that it was only a suggestion and not an approved design since we could not legally design a..system for them. I also stated there was no guarantee this system would work since the flows were only estimated and that the owner may still have to pump the tanks on a weekly basis. I made it clear that the system was only temporary and that I expected them to connect to the City of Rifle system when available. When you get ready to review the design and if you want our help contact Jerry Biberstine, John Blair, or myself. Sincerely, FOR D WATER QUALITY CONTROL DIVISION Richard H. Bowman, P.E.
