The proposed system is intended to replace the existing sewage disposal system. The design is intended to meet the requirements of the Garfield County Sewage Disposal System regulations. Background The current septic system serving the 3- bedroom, single - family residence has failed. Little information is available about the current system. The residence has an automatic clothes washer and a garbage disposal. Percolation Tests Percolation tests were performed at several elevations in the proposed seepage field area. A good percolation rate of 15 minutes per inch was obtained at 4', and 7 minutes per inch at 8' below existing grade. Inspection Hole • A 9' deep inspection hole was dug in the vicinity of the proposed seepage area. The test hole consisted of 6 to 8 inches of dark organic topsoil underlain by very large cobbles and rocks (up to approximately 30 inches in size) intermixed with a clayey sand and gravel. From 4 feet to 9 feet the soil profile revealed a moist, slightly clayey sand and gravel, which became less clayey with increased depth. No ground water was encountered. Septic Tank A 1000 gallon septic tank must be installed a minimum distance of 5 feet from the building, and a minimum distance of 10 feet from the dry gulch. c(LOI(nu0 sI'I(INGs orr•R:rt 4360 JIO.Y'I' I'RIi1.1.01)8., S11 :150 COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO 80901 303 - 594-6146 Dick Gehrett September 20, 1984 Page 2 Lift Station A lift station will be necessary to pump the sewage effluent from the septic tank in back of the house to the front yard. The tank volume should be at least 200 gallons, but not more than 500 gallons. The extra capacity of the pumping chamber would allow for reserve storage in case of pump failure or electrical outage. A 4" diameter line should connect the septic tank to the pumping chamber. Immediate access to the lift station is necessary for pump servicing. The ground surface around the top of the lift station access shall slope downward to eliminate any surface water from entering into the pumping chamber. The pump for the lift station shall be sized to pump approximately 20 gallons per minute for an elevation or head of 10 feet. The pump should be supported approximately 4 to 6 inches off the floor. A concrete block will be satisfactory. The discharge pipe from the pump to the absorption dry wells shall be 1 -1/4 " in diameter, with a pressure rating equivalent to Schedule 40 PVC pipe. An alarm system should be installed to warn the residents if a pump failure occurs. Absorption Pits Two absorption pits are to be constructed, each with a wall surface area of 340 sq. ft. Each pit should be approximately 14' x 14' square with the leaching area beginning 3' below the ground surface. A typical section and site plan of the absorption pits is shown on the attached sketches. The 2 pits shall be separated by a minimum distance of 42' and connected with 4" diameter PVC. A copy of this report and attached calculations shall be submitted to the Garfield County Sanitation Department for review and approval. PLANNER Sewage Disposal System Job No. 1785.133 Dear Mr. Gehrett: According to your contractor, Stanek Construction, the installation of a leach field would be more feasible to construct than the seepage pits as designed in our original submittal. Stanek Construction also informed me that if the leach field is constructed 8' below the existing ground surface in front of your home, that a lift station will not be required. I see no problems with Stanek Construction's proposal. If you decide to go ahead with the construction of the seepage bed, it must be level and have an area of 680 square feet. A 12' x 57' bed should work satisfactorily. The 4" diameter perforated distribution pipes shall be parallel and spaced 6' apart, and should be located 3' from the sidewall of the seepage bed. The bed should consist of a 12" layer of clean gravel or rock which may range from 3/4" to 2 -1/2" in size, and be placed at least 2" above the top of the distribution pipe and at least 6" below the bottom of the pipe. Once the gravel bed is complete, a heavy layer of hay or straw or a permeable engineering drainage fabric shall be placed on top of the gravel prior to placement of backfill. The first foot of backfill immediately above the gravel bed should not consist of any rocks or boulders larger than 4" in diameter. The final cover shall be graded to deflect runoff away from the drainage bed area. It is the County's policy to inspect the completed septic system prior to covering the gravel bed with the bay, straw or fabric.
