DEFINITIONS Company - Union Oil of California, Union Energy Mining Division Septic tank (Figure 1) - a watertight, accessible covered receptacle designed and constructed to receive sewage from a building sewer, to settle solids from the liquid, to digest organic matter, and store digested solids through a period of retention and allow the clarified liquids to discharge to other treatment units for final disposal. Dosing tank (Figure 2) - a holding tank with an automatic siphon or siphons which discharge effluent into the field at a predetermined volume. This large intermittent dose allows drying of the field between doses. This action extends the life of the absorption field. 4. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS 4.1 Septic tanks shall be designed with a minimum liquid capacity equal to 30 hours' flow of sewage. The minimum size tank shall not be less than 1500 gal capacity. A dosing tank (see Figure 2) with an automatic sewage siphon shall be provided with all septic tank installation with fields extending more than 500' of line. NO.: ES -H -1 WASTES PAGE 11 OF 15 I.D. DISK NO. 0747a NO. .0020a REV. 0 The use of absorption trenches is dependent on a porous strata being within a reasonable distance of ground surface 6. SIZING OF DISPOSAL SYSTEMS 6.1 Sizing of disposal systems is based ; on Square feet per 100 gal of the septic tank size, or;,gallons of flow per day. The required square feet area is based upon percolation rates or rated soil absorption capacity. Table IV indicates typical soil absorption rates in square feet of area required per 100 gallons for five types of soils. 6.2 Percolation tests shall be run to determine the actual absorption rate of the soil (see Section 7 of this specification) prior to system design and installation. • 6.3 Available square footage of absorption trenches, which is equal to the trench bottom width plus the available sidewall under the distribution pipe multiplied by the total length of the trenches. The available sidewall shall be not less than 6" or more than 15" with the distribution set 3" above the • available sidewall. 6.4 The minimum absorption area in square feet (A) for an individual sewage disposal system shall :be determined as a function of the estimated quantity of sewage flow in gallons per day (Q) and the rate in minutes per inch (t), according to the formula: A g x J t , where 5S t< 60 7. SOIL PERCOLATION TEST 7.1 Soil percolation tests shall be performed in at least three (3) test holes in the area in which the absorption system is to be located, spaced uniformly over the proposed site, except there shall be no less than - 1 test hole in any 1200 sq ft area of the r - absorptionrsystem. r L , tle DME.106 (9434) c I SPECIFICATION Union Energy Mining Division ''' - - Union Oil Company of California •"#. it; umen TITLE: SEPTIC SYSTEM FOR HUMAN- SPEC. NO.: ES -H -1 WASTES PAGE 12 OF 15 I.D. DISK Na 0747a Na 0020a REV. 7.2 The percolation test holes shall be from 4" to 12" in diameter, and shall be terminated at the depth of the proposed absorption system. 7.3 One soil profile test hole at least 18' deep or to bedrock, must be completed to give an indication of the soil condition in the area including that soil zone at least 4' below the bottom of, the proposed absorption system. 7.4 Percolation test holes shall be filled with water to a depth of 14" or more at least 8 hours prior to Making the water percolation test, and shall be refilled with water if necessary to a depth of at least 14" prior to final measurement. Measure the time for the water to drop one inch within the lower 25% depth of the percolation test hole. The percolation rate shall be reported in minutes of time per inch drop. 7.5 The field percolation rate shall be +he average rate of the percolation tests after rate has stabilized in all the test holes observed in the proposed absorption area. A percolation rate of between 5 and 60 minutes per inch is required. A field percolation rate determined by the test shall be used in calculating the absorption area required for the proposed system. (See Section 6.4.) 7.6 The percolation test results shall be verified by UEMD's registered professional civil /structural engineer. The percolation test results shall be submitted with the application for the County Health and Building Code permits. 8. DISPOSAL SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS 8.1 Capacity of the dosing tank is calculated on 75% of the total gallon capacity of the absorption pipe. The capacity of the tank is the volume contained within the area of the siphon's draw -down distance. In a large field this may amount to several thousand gallons. In these cases it is more economical to install dual alternating siphons. Each siphon would • then serve one -half of the field, thus effectively reducing the tank capacity by one -half. • '< SPECIFICATION Union Energy Mining Division ' - - Union Oil Compony of Colifornio . unu n , TITLE. • SPEC.
