Box 113 Glenwood Springs, CO 81602 ATPN: John Strickland RE: Inland Mariculture I.S.D.S. Permit 11590 Dear John: As discussed with you by telephone on 11/02/87, the review of the septic disposal permit by John Blair of the Colorado Dept. of Health, Water Control Division, turned up a discrepancy in the quantity used in flow determinations for the Inland Mariculture facility. The corrected flow quantity results in a design quantity of over 2,000 gallons per day, and thus requires that Garfield County refer this disposal application to the State of Colorado, as the State has jurisdiction over flow quantities in excess of 2,000 gpd. Garfield County must rescind the granted Permit 11590 and refer all further action for review and approval of the application to the Colorado Dept. of Health. If I can assist in any way, please let me know. Sincerely, Jim McMurrey Inspector JMcM/1jb xc John Blair 109 8TH STREET, SUITE 303 945- 8212/625 -5571 GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLORADO 81601 r v 6 JOHN C. WARD, Ph.D., PE. 29474 Roan Drive Consulting Environmental Engineer Evergreen Colorado 80439 (303) 670 -3180 October 27, 1987 Mr. John E. Strickland Schmueser & Associates, Inc. 1512 Grand Ave., Suite 210 Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 Dear John: Following are my calculations for the design of the sewage disposal system for the Inland Mariculture Live Seafood Facility. 1. There will be a total of 13 employees, 6 day workers at offices at 15 gallons /(person) (day) and 7 factory workers at 35 gallons/ (person) (day) = 335 gallons per day (fresh water). 2. Sludge from oyster tanks: - 69 gallons per day (salt dater). 3. The three tanks of the oyster washer will be dumped once per day: 63 gallons per .day (fresh water). 4. One -half of the total algae flume volume will be dumped every 3 months: 28 gallons /day (salt water). 5. Pressure sand filter backwash water. Backwash time is about 2 minutes per foot of filter depth which is 1.13 feet for a total of 2.26 minutes. The backwash rate will be a maximum of 159 gallons per minute, so the total used per backwash is 359 gallons. The length of run between backwashes is expected to be 3 days, so the amount of backwash water used per filter is 120 gallons per day. For 11 pressure sand filters this comes to 1,320 gallons per day (fresh water). Adding up the above gives a design quantity of 335 +69 +63 +28 +1,320 = 1,815 gallons per day. Of this amount, 97 gallons per day is salt water and 1,718 gallons per day is fresh water. The average sal- inity of water from the City of Rifle is 764 mg /1 and the maximum salinity is 1,501 mg /1. The average salinity of the salt water above is 22,886 mg /1. Therefore the salinity of the combined wastewater from this facility will be around 1,946 mg /1. • Mr. John E. Strickland Schmueser & Associates, Inc. October 27, 1987 Page T o Percolation tests were performed by Schmueser & Associates, Inc. Test hole 1 was located between the Inland Mariculture Building and the east property line. Test holes 2 and 3 were just east of the east property line. The required volume of the septic tanks is 2,500 gallons. The Schmueser & Associates, Inc. percolation tests are summarized below. Water Percolation Calculated Absorption Test Hole Rate, t, Minutes Rate, Q, gallons Number per Inch (after (ft 4 hours) 1 27.9 0.95 2 12.9 1.39 3 16.5 1.23 Average 1.19 Q was calculated using the equation Q a 5/ In addition eight previous percolation tests performed by ATEC on the south side of the property gave an average calculated absorption rate of 1.67 gallons /(ft)(day). Nevertheless, the average figure deter- mined by the Schmueser & Associates, Inc. percolation tests will be used. Also enclosed with this letter is drawing No. PR1 entitled "Sewage Disposal System ". Mr. John E. Strickland Schmueser & Associates, Inc. October 27, 1987 Page Three For a trench 5 feet wide, the required trench length would be about 305 feet. However, by increasing the depth of gravel below the perforated pipe from six inches (6 ") to three feet, six inches (3'-6"), the trench length can be reduced to 54% of what would be required otherwise, or to 165 feet. The actual length of trench that will be used is 192 feet. • Sincerely, \ aa "p E$ . ? x ° 3 1 • John C. Ward • 6640 . . -449 0 Curate
