RE: Inland Mariculture Live Seafood Facility
Design of Sewage Treatment Facilities
Dear Jim:
I have been retained by Dr. Larry Raymond, Inland Mariculture, to re-
design and resubmit engineering calculations for the above- referenced
facility. Since your prior review, we have met with Mr. John Blair of
the Health Department to review the design criteria and procedures that
his office would plan to follow. Our design utilizes the following de-
sign considerations:
1) We have elected to split the projected wastewater flows into
domestic flows and industrial flows. There will, therefore, be
two separate systems to be considered.
2) The combined design flow of the two systems is 1,800 gpd. The
breakdown will be presented below.
3) We will be submitting to Mr. Blair directly a Dopy of this ap-
plication in case you wish for a courtesy review from the State
Health Department. We feel that technically the review and
approval procedure falls under your jurisdiction, but would
welcome Mr. Blair's comments.
DOMESTIC WASTEWATER DESIGN
The design of the domestic wastewater system is based on the following:
1) Six day workers @ 15 gpd = 90 gpd.
2) Seven industrial workers @ 35 gpd = 245 gpd.
3) Total work force of 13 workers with average
design flow of 335 gpd.
4) Design flow, based on 150 percent peaking factor, is 500 qpd.
Please see the plan sheet for sizing of the drain field and septic
tanks.

I will follow the same format aMi the previous submittal to you. I
spent considerable time with Dr. Raymond discussing the operational
characteristics of the industrial ,portion of the facilities. We have
attempted to define the wastewater flows that we anticipate from the
facility, recognizing that this system is a "custom designed" system
and, therefore, we do not have field data from other facilities to show
you to justify our design. I will outline our assumptions which we
have made, emphasizing that we have attempted to be conservative in
each area so that our facilities for wastewater disposal are, in fact,
sufficient.
The following production facilities will produce wastewater flows; de-
scription of their operation and calculation of wastewater flows pro-
duced is as follows:
1) Oyster tank residue - The residue or sludge from the oyster
tanks is essentially an inert by- product of the process. It
consists of inert portions of fecal matter, algae residue and
other miscellaneous residues from the oysters themselves. The
residue is collected from the hopper bottoms of each individual
oyster tank and periodically 'pumped to a separate holding tank.
This folding tank is designed so that the liquid residue is al-
lowed to settle in the tank, with the overflow or clear portion
of the mixture decanted to the oyster tanks and concentrating
the inert, settleable portion settling out in this hopper bot-
tom. The volume of the hopper bottom is approximately 69 gal -
lons. For design purposes, we have assumed that this hooper
bottom will be pumped once each day to the treatment system. I
should point out that we, in fact, anticipate that the tank will
be pumped out much less frequently than this, perhaps as little
as twice a week but, again to be conservative, have assumed a
daily discharge to the wastewater system. Therefore, the total
design flow is the same, 69 gpd.
2) Oyster washer - The oyster washer resembles a "large commercial
dishwasher ". The washer is used to recieve immature oysters
which are shipped to the ;facility. As these oysters are re-
ceived, they are put through the oyster washer for a pre- condi-
tioning treatment before they are placed in the regular oyster
beds. The washer is a continuous system which re- circulates the
wash water. The total capacity of the washer is 42 gallons; at
the end of a washing program, the 42 gallons would be discharged
to the wastewater system. • It is anticipated that oysters will
only be received two or thtee times a week. However, for design
purposes, we have assumed that the oyster washer will be uti-
lized daily and, therefore have used a design flow of 42 gpd.

3) Algal flume - In addition to the oyster beds, there'will be
tanks in which ' algae' are raised for the food source for the
oysters. The total volume of the algal flumes is 5,680 gallons.
This volume mmyy. hale to be recyloed at the rate. of one -half the
total volume (2,840 gallons) per year. I emphasised "may" be-
cause this is a very conservative assumption and it is entirely
possible no turnover volume may be required. In the previous
submittal to you, this was assumed to be a discharge flow to the
system. Dr. Raymond has revised his piping layout so that, if
the system is turned over, it will pumped at a relatively low
rate back into the oyster tanks. We have calculated that the
net evaporation from the oyster tanks is well in excess of 300
gpd and, rather than replacing that evaporative loss with a
clean water source, it can be replaced with discharge from the
algal flume during the time the volume is being changed over.
Therefore, there will be no discharge to the wastewater system.
4) Pressure sand filters - This is, by far, the largest potential
discharge to the disposals system. The discharge will consist
of backwash hater from the.. eleven pressure sand filters. Before
proceeding with the design considerations for these filters, it
is important to note that, first of all, they are very different
from traditional domestic . water filters in that they consist
entirely of silica sand median. The water being filtered, is
very clear with few suspended solids for filtration; the flow
stream is also treated with hydrogen peroxide prior to being
placed on the filter, resulting in almost total oxidation of any
organic solids which may be present. The design of these
filters is as follows:
* Filter media - No. 20 silica sand.
* Filter media depth - 1.13 feet.
* Recommended backwash time - Two minutes per foot of media or
2.26 minutes.
* Diameter of filter - Three feet or 7.07 square feet.
* Recommended backwash rate - 20 gpm /sf.
* Backwash rate - 140 gpm.
We have made the assumption that each filter will be backwashed
once every three days. Because of the extreme clarity of the
water to be filtered, it is not felt that it is likely that
backwashing will occur this frequently. Based upon eleven fil-
ters, the daily discharge to the wastewater system will, there-
fore, be 1,200 gpd. Hence, this will also be the design flow
rate.

DESIGN SOMMARY •
The design flow rate for the domestic disposal system will be 500 gpd.
The design flow for the industGii+l'. wastewater ).fecilities will be as
follows::
* Oyster tank residue - 69 qpd.
* oyster wa §her - 62 gpd. •
* Algal flume --zero '
* Sand filter system - 1,200 gpd:
Zbtal - 1)500 gpd.
I trust that the above discussion is sufficient for your review needs.
As I mentioned above, we have been conservative whereverpossible in
determining the wastewater flows and we .feel that, based On our under -
standing of the industrial production faciiities,,.the design is conser-
vatively representative of the anticipated wastewater flows. I have
tried to include some discussion of the production facilities in order
to provide you with a clear understanding of the facilities and to fa-
cilitate your review. If you do have any'guestions, Dr. Raymond and I
would be more than happy to sit down with you to further review the
design. Please note that I have forwarded a Dopy of this to Mr. Blair
in Grand Junction.
Respectfully submitted,
