DESIGN REPORT DOMESTIC SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM McCLANE CANYON SITE SALT CREEK MINING COMPANY SECTION 21, T.7.S., R.102W., 6th P.M. GARFIELD COUNTY, COLORADO PREPARED BY: Banner Associates, Inc. October 10, 1988 Consulting Engineers 2777 Crossroads Blvd. Grand Junction, CO 81506 (303) 243 -2242 I. INTRODUCTION This report has been prepared at the request of Salt Creek Mining Company. Salt Creek Mining Company has an existing coal mine in McClane Canyon which is located in Section 21, T.7.S., R.102W., 6th Principal Meridian, Garfield County, Colorado. Presently the mine is inactive. The company is planning to move their main office from Grand Junction to the mine site. Facilities are also planned for crews to clean and change after working once the mine is reopened. This report addresses the design of the domestic sewage disposal system for this site. The site is approximately 17 miles north of Loma just off State Highway 139. It is situated at an elevation of 5425 with the terrain sloping down toward the west at 5 %. A dry wash is located approximately 100 feet to the south and Salt Creek flows 200 feet to the west. The soil profile in the area of the proposed absorption bed consists of a surface layer, 12 to 24 inches thick, of sandy loam and some organic material with intermittent gravel and rocks. A sandy loam with gravel and intermittent rocks are then consistent to a depth of ten feet. Neither bedrock or groundwater were encountered within ten feet of ground surface. Vegetation consists mainly of sagebrush and a mixture of grasses. It appears that a conventional septic tank and absorption bed system will function the best at this site based on percolation rate, elevation, temperatures and other factors. II. PERCOLATION TESTS A percolation test was performed on September 22, 1988 by Banner Associates. Three test pits were dug and spaced approximately 60 feet apart. Two to three test holes were then placed in each pit at varying depths below ground surface. These test holes were four inches in diameter and ranged in depth from 16 to 21 inches. Each hole was filled with water for an eight hour pre -soak period. After the pre -soak period each hole was again filled with water and then measurements were taken to determine the stabilized percolation rate for each hole. The results were as follows: HOLE DEPTH BELOW G.S. STABILIZED PERC. RATE PIT 1 A 3.5' 1 in. /21 min. B 5.5' 1 in. /21 min. PIT 2 C 3.5' 1 in. /20 min. D 5.0' 1 in. /15 min. E 10.0' No clear perc. rate PIT 3 F 3.0' 1 in. /8 min. G 5.0' 1 in. /22 min. Average = 1 in. /18 min. It is recommended that a conservative rate of 25 minutes per inch be used. III. ESTIMATED SEWAGE VOLUME It is proposed that the mine will employ 10 full -time persons initially and up to 35 full -time persons long range. Of the 35 persons only half would be at the mine during a shift. The cleanup facilities at the site would include showers and restrooms. Using a rate of 53 gallons per capita per day equals the maximum daily flow. Max. Daily Flow = 35 x 53 = 1855 gallons /day IV. SYSTEM DESIGN A. Septic Tank The volume of the septic tank should be such as to provide a minimum of 30 hours of detention. Therefore the minimum septic tank volume is calculated as follows: Septic Tank Volume = 1855 x 30/24 = 2319 gallons Standard septic tank sizes are 1000 and 1250 gallons, therefore use 2 - 1250 gallon tanks connected together in series. The tanks should be constructed with one compartment each. B. Absorption Bed The minimum absorption bed area is a function of the percolation rate and is calculated as follows: Area = Daily Flow / 5 x VIE where t = percolation rate, therefore Minimum Area = 1855 / 5 x 25 A = 1855 sq. ft. The attached drawings should be referred to for construction of the system.
