Subject: OWS Design, Proposed Residence
Tract 58, Antlers Orchard Subdivision, CR233
Garfield County, Colorado
Job No. 11186
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Spillane,
As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions at the site and designed an onsite wastewater system
(OWS) for the proposed residence. Garfield County personnel investigated subsurface conditions.
SITE CONDITIONS
The lot is located in a rural residential area in Garfield County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has
a gentle slope of 5% to the south. There is a good cover of native grass in the proposed field area.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A three - bedroom residence was being constructed at the location presented on Figure 1. Per our discussion,
we have designed the OWS as a four - bedroom system to accommodate suture buildout. In accordance with
the Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) regulations, a 4- bedroom residence is estimated at 600
gallons per day (GPD) average. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.5 is 900 GPD. Garfield
County requires sizing of the drain field for a garbage disposal to be 20% larger than the minimum drain
field size. Our design includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The residence will be
served water by a well located as indicated on Figures 1 and 2.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Subsurface conditions were investigated by digging 3 percolation holes 30 inches deep and one profile pit to
6.5 feet at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile 1 consisted of 12 inches of
topsoil underlain by a clayey, silt to the maximum depth explored of 6.5 feet. Ground water was
encountered at a depth of 5 feet. The results of percolation tests by Arno of Garfield County indicate a
percolation rate of 49 minutes per inch (MPI).
RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend the installation of 1250- gallon, two - compartment septic tank with an effluent filter, and 5
chamber trenches at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage
load of 600 GPD and a percolation rate of 49 MPI using the Garfield County sizing tables. The residence
has a crawl space and the stubout should be held high and the septic tank should be installed shallow to
avoid ground water and provide gravity flow to the trenches. The trenches can be no deeper than 2 feet no

maintain 4 feet of suitable soil between the bottom of the chambers and ground water. The trenches can be
shallower. We recommend the trenches be at least 12 inches deep. Flow to the trenches will be through a
distribution box. The distribution box have a minimum of 7 holes and we recommend the box with 9 holes
because of the additional room in the larger box. Flow levelors should be installed to control flow from the
box. Distribution boxes tend to settle with time and flow levelors allow adjustment of flow to the trenches.
The minimum number of chambers is 68 Infiltrator chambers. We have sized the trenches to have a uniform
length and therefore 70 chambers are proposed.
Movement over the drain field trench bottom during construction should be kept at a minimum to
prevent compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of each trench be scarified with
a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service, and must assume the responsibility
for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic
tanks pumped. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped and the
effluent filter cleaned every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other
nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run
when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of 1000 GPD. A
loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS.
The loading from the backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should
be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming
pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
An OWS requires installation by a contractor who is experienced in installations. The investigation, layout,
design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If conditions different from those described in
this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the OWS. If the health depart-
ment makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the OWS.
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the Garfield County ISDS regulations and requirements.
