AsyN CHURCH & Associates, Inc. ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS December 22, 1999 Ken Beck P.O. Box 813 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and OWS Design Proposed Beck Residence Tract 5, County Road 233 Garfield County, Colorado Job No. 11936 Dear Mr. Beck, As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions at the site and designed an onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed residence. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on December 1, 1999. A Soils and Foundation Investigation was performed on the subject site and is presented under separate cover. SITE CONDITIONS The lot is located in a rural residential area in Garfield County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has a gentle slope of 2 -3% to the south. There is a thick cover of grass in the proposed field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A three - bedroom residence is proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. In accordance with the Individual .Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) regulations, the average wastewater flow from a 3- bedroom residence is 450 Gallons Per Day (GPD). The design sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.5 is 675 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The residence will be served water by a well located north of the proposed residence. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Subsurface conditions were investigated by digging 3 percolation holes, 29 to 36 inches deep, and one pro- file pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in the Profile Pit consisted of 12 inches of topsoil, underlain by silty clay to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Ground water was measured at 3 feet at the time of our investigation. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 60 to 240 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 140 MPI. DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 CASTLE ROCK 303.660.4358 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 EVERGREEN 303.816.1455 OWS Design Job No. 11936 Page 2 RECOMMENDATIONS We recommend the installation of a septic tank, a pump, and a pressure - distributed mounded bed. The mounded bed is required due to ground water at a depth of 3 feet. The OWS design is based on an average sewage Toad of 675 GPD and a percolation rate of 140 MPI. The design presents a 1250 - gallon, two - compartment septic tank with a pump in a Biotube vault. This configuration includes an over -sized septic tank with the pump within a biotube filter in the septic tank. An alternative is two septic tanks with the pump in the second tank. The pump will dose the top of the sand mound with a minimum of' 250 gallons. A pump is required to pressurize the effluent lines and to distribute the effluent through the top of the mound. The pump must be capable of discharging 29.6 gallons per minute with a total dynamic head of 21.3. Pump details are presented in the pump curve. We recommend the installation of one pressure distributed chamber -bed mound with 2.0 feet of imported sand filter material. The top of the mound must have 4 rows of 12 chambers, as indicated on Figures 1 and 2 for an area of 744 square feet (SF). The 1.25 -inch PVC suspended laterals must have 1/8 -inch holes on 4 -foot centers facing upward. Every fifth hole must be facing downward. The sand media must be 18 feet in width and 89 feet in length for a basal area of 1602 SF. Movement over the drain field bed bottom during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the field be excavated from the surface by a backhoe. No rubber -tired equipment should be allowed in the bottom of the field excavation. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service, and must assume the responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tank pumped. In the absence of a monitoring program, we recommend the septic tank be pumped and the effluent filter cleaned every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of 1000 GPD. A loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS. The loading from the backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS An OWS design requires installation by a licensed contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department or another party makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon the completion of the OWS. All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to OWS Design • Job No. 11936 Page 3 • the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the county ISDS regulations and requirements. If there are any questions or if we can be of further service, please call. Box 813 Carbondale, CO 81623 Subject: Soils and Foundation Investigation, Proposed Beck Residence Tract 5, County Road 233 Garfield County, Colorado Job No. 11936 Dear Mr. Beck, As requested, we observed the test pit excavated in the area of the proposed residence at the subject prop- erty on December 7, 1999. The purpose of our observation was to evaluate subsurface conditions at the proposed residence. Our office performed an Onsite Wastewater Evaluation (OWS), which is presented under separate cover. The site is located in a rural residential area northwest of the town of Silt, Colorado. The proposed house location has a gentle slope of 2 -3% to the south and a thick cover of grass. The proposed residence will be an approximate 1660 square foot (SF), 1 -story residence with a crawl space. The test pit was excavated in the southeast corner of the proposed residence, as indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Test Pit -1 consisted of 6 inches of topsoil, underlain by very moist to wet, silty clay to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Ground water was measured at 3 feet in TP -1 and caving occurred at approximately 6.5 feet. The `Log of Exploratory Pit' is presented as Figure 2. The results of Swell- Consolidation tests are presented on Figures 3 and 4. The samples were "hand drives" and may be slightly disturbed, but present the potential for consolidation. The results of our observations indicate a spread footing foundation system is appropriate for the residence. Spread footing supported by natural silty clay should be designed for a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 1000 PSF. Footings should bear on the undisturbed natural soil 12 inches below natural grade due to groundwater conditions. Any soil loosened or disturbed during foundation construction should be removed prior to placing concrete. Excessive wetting or drying of the subgrade should be avoided during construc- tion. We believe three feet of frost protection is necessary for the foundation. We recommend the finished grade in the crawl space be slope to a low point. If necessary a sump pit can be installed at the low point and water can be removed by pumping. The onsite soil is suitable for support of slab -on -grade construction such as garage slabs and exterior flatwork. Where fill is required, we recommend compaction of onsite soil and or clean granular fill to a minimum of 95% of the maximum standard Proctor density as determined by ASTM D698 to support slabs DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 CASTLE ROCK 303.660.4358 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 EVERGREEN 303.816.1455 Soils and Foundation Investigation Job No. 11936 Page 2 such as exterior flatwork. All slabs should be separated from exterior walls with a joint, which allows the slab to move freely. The ground surface should be graded to provide positive drainage away from the structures in all directions. We recommend a minimum slope of 12 inches in the first 10 feet from the structure. Any settlement of backfill should be immediately filled and have positive drainage re-established away from the residence.
