Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, 0095 Elk Range Road, Eagle
County, Colorado
Job No. 4 128 94
Dear Ms. Denton:
As requested, Chen - Northern, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on October
28, 1993 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. Our observations and
recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report.
At Ole time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in two levels
from 6 to 11 feet below the adjacent ground surface and was not completed. The soils
exposed in the bottom of the completed portion of the excavation consisted of gravel with
cobbles and boulders in a silty sand matrix. Sandy clay was observed in the garage area of
the excavation (upper level), Results of swell - consolidation testing performed on samples
taken from the excavation are shown on Fig. 1. The results indicate the silty sand matrix
soils are moderately compressible under conditions of light loading and wetting. The sandy
clay has low expansion potential when wetted under light surcharge load and moderate
compressibility upon additional loading. No free water was observed in the excavation at
the time of site visit.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural granular soil designed for
an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf should be adequate for support of the
proposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous wails
and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils encountered at the foundation bearing
level within the excavation should be removed and the footings extended down to adequate
natural bearing material. Where overexcavation is required to remove boulders at footing
grade, the overexcavated areas should be backfilled with granular soils compacted to at least
98% of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Exterior footings
should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost
protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span an
unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures
should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight
of 50 pcf. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup
of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. If structural
fill is placed within floor slab areas, it can consist of the on -site soils devoid of topsoil and
oversize rock and compacted to at least 95% of standard Proctor density at a moisture

content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the
surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the foundation excavation. Since we did not conduct subsurface exploration,
we have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth
of influence of the foundation. Variations in the subsurface conditions could impact the
performance of the foundation. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the
subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the
data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in
this letter.
If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely,
CHEN - NORTHERN, INC.
