Subject: Building permit application
Dear Art:
Please excuse my delay in not replying to your letter until now, x have
been out of town.
Answers to your questions:
4 (a) The enclosed deck will be used as a back porch until late Fall and
again early Spring. Maby as storage in the Winter. For this reason we are
not changing doors or windows entering this area.
(b) The post and beam are 4X4 Fir. They are attached to each other with
metal brackets. Posts are fastened to the concrete pedistal by use of a
welded metal assembly buried in the concrete. The concrete pedistals are
24X24x36, the 20" depth was a typo error.
(e) The 2X8X12 joists are Fir attached to a Fir headerijoists with metal
hangers and screws. The joists are 16" on center and doubled up at the
posts. They are attached to the posts with bolts, headers also. The header
is attached to the house with lag.bolts and screws. The joist /header
structure is also attached to the concrete deck with 2X4 and 2X6 attached to
the concrete with studs driven into the concrete with a 22 stud driver.
There is a crawl space approximately three (3) inches high at the building
wall and sloping to approximately eight (8) inches high at the SW corner.
The ground under the deck is covered with plastic and gravel. The crawl
space will not be enclosed, left open for ventilation.
(d) Columns and beams are positively connected with metal brackets and
metal assembly into concrete.
(e) The roof joists are 2X6X10 and 2X6x14 overlapping and attached to each
with bolts, screws and to the beams with metal brackets. original joists
were 2X6 Cedar set 1a" on center, these joists originally supported a fiber-
- glass roof. Now, matching 2X6 Fir joists have been added and attached to
to the existing Cedar. These are screwed and bolted together making a solid
support for the roof. End of joists are attached to headers with metal
framing anchors. Headers are attached to building with lag screws.
A 16' metal vent strip will be used on SW side of soffit to venelate the
roof.
(f) The roof is 3/4" plywood insulated with 6" blanket insulation and 1/2"
drywall an the interior. R value of the plywood is .93, 6" insulation is
24. for a total of 24.93. Three layers (3) of lapped 30 lb. roofing paper
should have additional insulating value. I could add a int~h o _ rigid
insulation -- please let me know, 0 ptc a srt9n /,
The walls will be insulated with 6" blanket insulation. SW side wall will
be 2X6 studs, exterior covered with 1/2" plywood, building paper and siding
to match the house. Looks like a ahip pattern. All other outside walls
are 2X4 stud, 1/2" plywood, 1" rough sawn Cedar, 6" blanket insulation and
eventually the thin wood panel interior. •
(g1 No heat, insulatingifactor in walls and ceiling, carpeted floor will r.:i,'I,.,w t,: ;r
allow use of this room without heat until late Fall and early Spring.

Subject: Application for building permit with Garfield County.
Dear Mr. Lavold:
I have reviewed you letter to Mr. Shore of Battlement Mesa which you
included in your application to Garfield County. Regarding the items in
your letter I submit the following comments:
1) Overhead garage door. The weight will be greatly increased by what
your propose and will probably require new or additional springs
which are not a code concern. However, make certain that the
supporting frame for the door is adequate for the additional weight.
2) Garage door and window. Headers will be required for these new
openings and you are required to request a framing inspection prior
to covering.
3) A permit is not required for a fence not over 6 feet high.
4) Regarding this item I will need the following information prior to
issuance of the permit:
(a) What is the use of the enclosed space, bed room, dining
area, storage, etc.?
(b) Referenced "Post and Beam Construction set on 24" X 24"
X 30" post footings and anchored to the concrete deck and
house." Please provide a detail, foundation for habitable
space is required to be provided to a depth of 36" below
finished grade.
(c) What is the species of the 2" x 8" wood floor joists, how
are they supported, what is the span and is there a crawl
space under the floor? If yes to the crawl space, what is
the height of the crawl space and how is it vented or
intended to be vented?
(d) How are columns positively connected to the beams and
to the concrete?
109 8TH STREET, SUITE 303 945- 8212/625- 5571/285 -7972 GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLORADO 81601
(e) Regarding the roof joists, what is the species, how are
they supported, what is the span and how are they vented
or intended to be vented?
(f) How do you intend to provide insulation in the roof to an
R -25 and in the 2" x 4" walls to an R -19 factor?
(g) How will this area be heated?
5) No permit required if less than 30 " above grade.
I will need the information indicated above in order to adequately evaluate
your application. If you have any questions please give me a call at 945-
8212. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
/G
